About the TOEFL Score Calculator
This TOEFL score calculator works out your TOEFL iBT overall score on the 1–6 band scale that ETS introduced on 21 January 2026. Enter your Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing band scores and it averages them and rounds to the nearest half band, exactly as ETS describes, then shows the matching CEFR level and the comparable range on the familiar 0–120 scale.
If you have older results on the 0–30 section scale — or a university that still quotes requirements out of 120 — switch to the legacy mode. Each 0–30 section score is converted to its 1–6 band with ETS’s official comparison table, your 0–120 total is added up, and you can see both the band derived from the sections and the band that matches the total.
It is useful for test takers checking whether they meet a program’s minimum, students translating an old score report, and admissions staff comparing applicants across the two scales. ETS reports a comparable 0–120 score alongside the new band for a two-year transition period (to January 2028), but comparison tables are general guides, so always check each institution’s own requirement.
With the default inputs, the overall toefl band (1–6) is 5. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the toefl score calculator
- 1Choose whether your scores are on the new 1–6 scale or the legacy 0–30 scale.
- 2Enter your Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing scores.
- 3Read your overall band, CEFR level and comparable 0–120 range.
- 4Compare the result with each program’s minimum overall and section requirements.
- 5Use the note to see how much your weakest section needs to rise for the next half band.
Formula and method
On the 1–6 scale, each section is scored in half-band steps and the overall score is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band; ETS’s own example is an average of 5.25 becoming 5.5, so quarter values round up. The CEFR level follows ETS’s alignment: 6 = C2, 5–5.5 = C1, 4–4.5 = B2, 3–3.5 = B1, 2–2.5 = A2 and 1–1.5 = A1.
In legacy mode, each 0–30 section score is converted to a band with the section-specific ETS comparison table (for example Reading 24–26 = 5, Speaking 25–26 = 5), then averaged the same way. The 0–120 total is also compared with ETS’s total table (114+ = 6, 107+ = 5.5, 95+ = 5, 86+ = 4.5, 72+ = 4 and so on).

Worked examples
New scale: 5 / 5.5 / 4.5 / 5
The four bands add to 20, an average of exactly 5.0, so the overall score is 5 — CEFR C1, comparable to a 95–106 total on the old 0–120 scale.
Average of 4.25 rounds up
The bands average 4.25, which rounds up to the nearest half band, 4.5 (ETS’s rule: 5.25 becomes 5.5). That is CEFR B2.
Legacy scores 27 / 25 / 23 / 24
Reading 27 = 5.5, Listening 25 = 5, Speaking 23 = 4.5 and Writing 24 = 5 on ETS’s comparison table. They average 5.0, an overall 5 (C1). The old total of 99 also falls in the 95+ band for 5.
Legacy high scorer 29 / 28 / 26 / 27
The sections convert to 6, 6, 5 and 5.5, averaging 5.625, which is nearest to 5.5. The 110 total sits in the 107+ band, also 5.5.
Frequently asked questions
How is the new TOEFL 1–6 score calculated?+
Each of the four sections is scored from 1 to 6 in half-band steps, and the overall score is their average rounded to the nearest half band. ETS’s example: an average of 5.25 is reported as 5.5.
What is TOEFL 100 on the new 1–6 scale?+
A total of 100 falls in ETS’s 95+ range, which corresponds to an overall band of 5 (CEFR C1). Totals of 107 and above correspond to 5.5, and 114 and above to 6.
What CEFR level is each TOEFL band?+
ETS aligns the 1–6 scale to CEFR: 6 is C2, 5 and 5.5 are C1, 4 and 4.5 are B2, 3 and 3.5 are B1, 2 and 2.5 are A2, and 1 and 1.5 are A1. The same mapping applies to each section.
When did the TOEFL score scale change?+
ETS introduced the 1–6 band scale for the TOEFL iBT on 21 January 2026. For two years (to January 2028), score reports also show the CEFR level and a comparable 0–120 overall score, set at the midpoint of the matching 0–120 range.
What TOEFL score do universities require?+
Many universities ask for around 80–100 on the old scale, which is roughly 4–5 on the new one, and selective graduate programs often want 100 or more (5 and above). Some also set minimum section scores, so check each program.
