About the National Merit Selection Index Calculator

This National Merit calculator computes the NMSC Selection Index exactly as College Board describes it for the digital PSAT/NMSQT: double your Reading and Writing section score, add your Math section score, and divide by 10. Enter your two section scores (160–760 each) and you get your Selection Index on the 48–228 scale, how far you are above or below the cutoffs you enter, and how many more section points would close the gap.

It is built for juniors waiting on — or planning for — National Merit Semifinalist and Commended status, and for parents and counselors estimating where a student stands. Because Reading and Writing is counted twice, the calculator also shows whether raising that section or Math is the faster route to a cutoff.

Semifinalist cutoffs are set separately for each state every year, and the Commended cutoff is one national figure. National Merit Scholarship Corporation does not publish them until after scores are out, so enter the latest figures for your state and class year; the defaults are only illustrative. Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in the fall of junior year (or the alternate route NMSC approves) counts toward the program.

With the default inputs, the nmsc selection index is 212. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method

Selection Index = (2 × RW + Math) ÷ 10

College Board calculates the NMSC Selection Index by doubling the Reading and Writing section score, adding the Math section score and dividing the sum by 10. With both sections reported on a 160–760 scale, the index runs from 48 to 228, and because section scores move in steps of 10, every 10 points in Reading and Writing is worth 2 index points while 10 points in Math is worth 1.

The gap figures compare your index with the cutoffs you enter. The “extra points” outputs solve the formula for the smallest section score (in steps of 10) that would reach the state cutoff while holding the other section fixed.

Worked examples

Just short of a 216 cutoff

(2 × 700 + 720) ÷ 10 = 212. That is 4 points below a 216 state cutoff but 4 above a 208 Commended level. Raising Reading and Writing by 20 points (to 720) would reach 216, while Math would need +40.

Comfortably above the cutoff

(2 × 740 + 760) ÷ 10 = 224, eight points above a 216 cutoff — above the Semifinalist line in every state with a cutoff of 224 or lower.

Solid score, below Commended

(2 × 600 + 650) ÷ 10 = 185 — a strong PSAT total of 1250, but 23 points below a 208 Commended level, which is set nationally so that only a small fraction of entrants qualify.

Frequently asked questions

How is the National Merit Selection Index calculated?+

Double your PSAT/NMSQT Reading and Writing score, add your Math score and divide by 10. A 700 Reading and Writing and 720 Math gives (1,400 + 720) ÷ 10 = 212. The index ranges from 48 to 228.

Why does Reading and Writing count twice?+

The index was designed when the PSAT had three equally weighted tests (reading, writing and math). On the two-section digital PSAT, doubling Reading and Writing keeps verbal skills at two-thirds of the index, as before.

What Selection Index do I need for National Merit Semifinalist?+

It depends on your state and year. NMSC sets each state’s cutoff so Semifinalists are about the top 1% of juniors in that state; in recent years cutoffs have ranged from the low 210s or below in the lowest-cutoff states to the low-to-mid 220s in the most competitive ones, and they move a few points from year to year.

When are National Merit cutoffs released?+

Students learn their own Commended or Semifinalist status through their schools in September of senior year, and state Semifinalist cutoffs become known at that time. The national Commended level is shared with schools in April of junior year.

Does the PSAT 10 or PSAT 8/9 count for National Merit?+

No. Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in the fall of the student’s third year of high school (junior year for most students) counts for entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program.
