About the UBE Bar Exam Score Calculator
This UBE score calculator rebuilds a Uniform Bar Examination total from its parts. Enter your Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) scaled score and your written scores — either the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) and Multistate Performance Test (MPT) separately or a combined written score, all on the MBE’s 200-point scale — and it weights them 50% MBE, 30% MEE and 20% MPT to give a total on NCBE’s 400-point scale.
Pick a jurisdiction to compare your total with its minimum passing score, which ranges from 260 to 270 across UBE jurisdictions, or enter a custom cut score. The calculator shows your margin, the MBE score you would need with the same written score, and the written score you would need with the same MBE — useful for bar takers reading a score report, repeat takers planning where to focus, and lawyers checking whether a score can be transferred to another state.
The legacy UBE is being replaced by the NextGen bar exam, with most jurisdictions switching between July 2026 and July 2028. Many will still accept legacy UBE scores earned earlier, within their own age limits. Written scores must already be scaled to the MBE; raw essay grades cannot be converted without your jurisdiction’s scaling data.
With the default inputs, the ube total score (out of 400) is 277. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method
NCBE weights the legacy UBE 50% MBE, 30% MEE and 20% MPT and reports the total on a 400-point scale. Your jurisdiction grades the essays and performance tests, and the combined written score is scaled to the MBE so that both halves are on the same 200-point scale. Adding the MBE scaled score to the scaled written score therefore gives the 400-point total; splitting the written half 60/40 reproduces the 30%/20% MEE/MPT weights.
The needed-score outputs solve the same equation: MBE needed = passing score − written score, and written needed = passing score − MBE. Some jurisdictions round reported totals, so a total within a fraction of a point of the cut score may be treated differently.

Worked examples
New York: MBE 140, MEE 135, MPT 140
The written score is 0.6 × 135 + 0.4 × 140 = 137, so the UBE total is 140 + 137 = 277 — 11 points above New York’s 266 and enough for every UBE jurisdiction, where the highest minimum is 270.
Texas: just short of 270
Written = 0.6 × 136 + 0.4 × 130 = 133.6, for a total of 265.6 — 4.4 below Texas’s 270. With the same written score, an MBE of 136.4 would pass; with the same MBE, a written score of 138 would.
Alabama with a combined written score
An MBE of 135 plus a 130 written score gives 265, passing Alabama’s 260 by 5 points. That total meets the 260 minimum in eight jurisdictions and Indiana’s 264, but not the 266–270 states.
Frequently asked questions
How is the UBE score calculated?+
The MBE counts for 50%, the MEE for 30% and the MPT for 20%. Written scores are scaled to the MBE’s 200-point scale, then the MBE and written scores are added for a total out of 400. For example, MBE 140 and written 137 give 277.
What is a passing UBE score?+
Each jurisdiction sets its own minimum: 260 in states such as Alabama, Minnesota and Missouri, 264 in Indiana, 266 in New York, Illinois and New Jersey, 268 in Michigan, and 270 in states including Texas, Arizona and Pennsylvania.
Can I transfer my UBE score to another state?+
Yes, if your score meets the receiving jurisdiction’s minimum and is within its age limit, which is commonly two to five years. You must also meet character and fitness and any local-component requirements, such as a state law course.
What MBE score do I need to pass the bar?+
It depends on your written score. To reach 266 with a 133 written score you need an MBE of 133; to reach 270 you need 137. Because written scores are scaled to the MBE, a 133 on each half is the classic benchmark for a 266 jurisdiction.
Is the UBE being replaced?+
Yes. NCBE’s NextGen bar exam begins in July 2026, and most jurisdictions will move from the legacy UBE to the NextGen UBE between July 2026 and July 2028. Many jurisdictions will continue to accept earlier legacy UBE scores during their validity period.
