About the GED Score Calculator

This GED score calculator checks your four GED test scores against the official score levels. Enter your Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA), Science and Social Studies scores, each reported from 100 to 200, and it tells you whether you have passed, which subjects reach GED College Ready or College Ready + Credit, and how many points you still need in each subject.

It is useful for adult learners tracking progress through the four tests, teachers and advisers planning retakes, and anyone deciding whether to send scores to a college for placement waivers or credit. The table lists every subject with its level and the points needed to reach the next one.

To earn a GED credential you need at least 145 on every subject — a high score in one subject cannot make up for a low score in another, so the total is shown for reference only. Scores of 165–174 indicate College Ready and 175–200 College Ready + Credit, which may be worth up to 10 college credit hours depending on the school.

How to use the ged score calculator

  1. 1Find your scaled score (100–200) for each GED subject on your score report.
  2. 2Enter all four scores; use a practice-test estimate for any subject you have not taken yet.
  3. 3Check the result to see whether every subject reaches 145.
  4. 4Review the table for each subject’s level and points to the next level.
  5. 5Send your scores to your college if any subject reaches College Ready or Credit.

Formula and method

Pass = every subject ≥ 145; College Ready = 165–174; College Ready + Credit = 175–200

Each of the four GED subject tests is scored on a scale from 100 to 200. You earn the credential only when every subject reaches the passing score of 145, so the calculator checks each subject on its own rather than averaging. The total of the four scores is shown for reference, but a total of 580 or more does not mean you passed if any subject is below 145.

GED Testing Service defines two higher levels: College Ready (165–174), which may exempt you from placement tests or remedial courses, and College Ready + Credit (175–200), which may earn up to 3 credits each in Math, Science and Social Studies and 1 in Humanities from RLA — up to 10 credit hours, subject to each college’s policy.

Worked examples

Passed, one College Ready subject

All four scores (158, 162, 150 and 171) are at least 145, so the GED is earned. Social Studies at 171 is in the College Ready range (165–174); none reaches 175, so no college credit applies.

Two subjects still below passing

RLA and Science pass, but Math is 5 points short and Social Studies 2 points short, 7 points in all. Even though the total of 585 is above 4 × 145 = 580, the credential requires 145 in each subject.

College credit in three subjects

Math (176), RLA (178) and Social Studies (181) are College Ready + Credit, worth up to 3 + 1 + 3 = 7 credit hours. Science at 168 is College Ready, 7 points short of the credit level.

Frequently asked questions

What is the passing score for the GED?+

You need at least 145 on each of the four subjects — Math, RLA, Science and Social Studies. Every subject must pass on its own; a high score in one subject does not offset a low score in another.

What is the GED score range?+

Each subject is scored from 100 to 200. Below 145 is not passing, 145–164 is passing, 165–174 is GED College Ready and 175–200 is GED College Ready + Credit.

What does GED College Ready mean?+

A score of 165–174 on a subject shows you are ready for college-level courses in that area. Many colleges let these students skip placement tests or non-credit remedial classes, saving time and money.

How many college credits can the GED earn?+

Scores of 175–200 can earn up to 3 credits each in Math, Science and Social Studies and 1 Humanities credit for RLA — up to 10 credit hours in total, if the college accepts them.

Is the GED total score 580 to pass?+

Four times 145 is 580, but the GED is not passed on total points. If any one subject is below 145 you must retake that subject, even if your total is above 580.
