About the GRE Score Calculator

This GRE score calculator adds your Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores into the 260–340 combined total that graduate programs talk about, and shows the percentile rank ETS prints on score reports for each section and for Analytical Writing. If you have scores from the GRE taken before August 2011, switch to the prior scale and it converts each 200–800 score to the current 130–170 scale with ETS’s official concordance table.

It is useful for graduate and business school applicants comparing their scores with a program’s admitted-student profile, students setting a target score, and advisers interpreting older transcripts. Percentiles show the share of test takers who scored lower, which is often a better yardstick than the raw number because Quant scores run higher than Verbal.

Percentiles come from ETS’s current interpretive data, based on everyone who tested between July 2022 and June 2025. ETS reports Verbal and Quant separately and never publishes a combined total or a percentile for it — the total is a convenience used by schools and applicants.

With the default inputs, the combined verbal + quant score is 315. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the gre score calculator

  1. 1Choose the current scale, or the prior 200–800 scale for pre-2011 scores.
  2. 2Enter your Verbal and Quant scores.
  3. 3Add your Analytical Writing score for its percentile.
  4. 4Read your combined total and section percentiles.
  5. 5Compare the percentiles with your target programs’ admitted-student data.

Formula and method

Total = Verbal + Quant (260–340); Percentile = ETS % of test takers scoring lower

The GRE General Test reports Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning on a 130–170 scale in one-point steps and Analytical Writing on a 0–6 scale in half-point steps. Adding Verbal and Quant gives the 260–340 combined figure many programs quote. Percentile ranks are looked up in ETS Table 1B and 1C, which give the percentage of test takers from July 2022 to June 2025 who scored lower than each score.

For scores from the prior 200–800 GRE (before August 2011), ETS published a concordance that maps each prior score, in steps of 10, to the current scale — for example 600 Verbal to 160 and 700 Quant to 155. The calculator rounds prior scores to the nearest 10 and applies that table before looking up percentiles.

Worked examples

Verbal 155, Quant 160, Writing 4.0

155 + 160 = 315. ETS’s table puts Verbal 155 at the 64th percentile and Quant 160 at the 50th, and an Analytical Writing score of 4.0 at the 63rd.

Converting an old 560 Verbal / 740 Quant

ETS’s concordance maps a prior-scale 560 Verbal to 157 and 740 Quant to 158, a combined 315. Those rank at the 72nd and 45th percentiles today, and Writing 4.5 at the 85th.

Competitive score: 165 Verbal, 168 Quant

A 333 combined score: Verbal 165 is the 95th percentile, Quant 168 the 80th (Quant percentiles run lower because many test takers score highly), and Writing 5.0 the 93rd.

Frequently asked questions

What is the GRE total score range?+

Verbal and Quant are each scored 130–170, so the combined total ranges from 260 to 340. Analytical Writing is scored separately from 0 to 6 and is not part of the total.

What is a good GRE score?+

In ETS’s current data the average is about 151 Verbal and 158 Quant. A 160 Verbal beats 82% of test takers and a 165 Quant beats 67%; competitive programs often look for totals of 320–330 or more, depending on field.

Why is my Quant percentile lower than my Verbal percentile?+

Many GRE test takers are strong in math, so Quant scores cluster higher. A 165 is the 95th percentile in Verbal but only the 67th in Quant, according to ETS’s July 2022–June 2025 data.

How do I convert old GRE scores to the new scale?+

ETS’s concordance maps each prior 200–800 score to the 130–170 scale. For example 500 Verbal becomes 153 and 700 Quant becomes 155. Choose the prior scale in this calculator to convert both sections.

How long are GRE scores valid?+

GRE General Test scores are reportable for five years after the test date. Scores from the prior 200–800 version are no longer reportable, so the concordance is mainly useful for interpreting older records.
