About the Academic Index Calculator

This Academic Index calculator estimates the single number Ivy League schools have long used to summarise an applicant’s academic record. The traditional Academic Index (AI) adds three parts, each worth up to 80 points, for a maximum of 240: a test score component, a second test component (originally SAT Subject Tests), and a converted rank score (CRS) built from class rank or GPA.

Enter an SAT total or an ACT composite (converted to SAT with the official 2018 ACT/SAT concordance) and either an unweighted GPA or your class rank and class size. The calculator shows each component, your estimated AI and how much a higher score or GPA would add, which helps students and counselors see whether testing or grades is the bigger lever.

This is an estimate, not an official figure. The Ivy League has never published its exact formula, SAT Subject Tests were discontinued in 2021, and each school calculates AI from its own records. This calculator follows the widely used modern simplification: the SAT component is counted twice in place of Subject Tests, GPA converts at 20 points per grade point, and rank converts linearly from 20 (bottom of class) to 80 (top). Use it to gauge academic strength, not to predict an admission decision.

With the default inputs, the estimated academic index (out of 240) is 223. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the academic index calculator

  1. 1Choose SAT or ACT and enter your best total or composite.
  2. 2Choose whether to use unweighted GPA or class rank.
  3. 3Enter your GPA, or your rank and class size.
  4. 4Read your estimated Academic Index and its components.
  5. 5Use the table and notes to see how a higher score or GPA would change it.

Formula and method

AI = 2 × (SAT ÷ 20) + CRS; CRS = 20 × GPA or 20 + 60 × (N − rank) ÷ (N − 1)

The classic Ivy League Academic Index added three components on a 20–80 scale: the SAT total divided by 20, the average SAT Subject Test score divided by 10, and a converted rank score. Since Subject Tests ended in 2021, the common simplification counts the SAT component twice. ACT composites are first converted to an SAT total with the official 2018 ACT/SAT concordance (for example ACT 33 = SAT 1460).

The converted rank score uses either unweighted GPA × 20 (so 4.0 = 80 and 3.5 = 70, limited to 20–80) or a linear class-rank conversion from 80 for the top student to 20 for the last. Real schools use their own conversion tables, so results can differ by several points.

Worked examples

SAT 1450 with a 3.9 GPA

1450 ÷ 20 = 72.5, counted twice = 145. A 3.9 unweighted GPA converts to 78, so the estimated Academic Index is 145 + 78 = 223 out of 240.

ACT 33 with a 3.8 GPA

ACT 33 concords to SAT 1460, giving 73 × 2 = 146. A 3.8 GPA adds 76, for an estimated AI of 222.

SAT 1500, ranked 5th of 400

The test component is 75 × 2 = 150. Ranking 5th of 400 converts to 20 + 60 × 395 ÷ 399 ≈ 79.4, so the AI is about 229.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Academic Index?+

It is a single number, historically out of 240, that Ivy League schools use to summarise an applicant’s grades and test scores. It was created to make sure recruited athletes’ academic profiles stay within a reasonable range of the overall student body.

How is the Academic Index calculated today?+

The Ivy League does not publish its current formula. The traditional version added SAT ÷ 20, SAT Subject Test average ÷ 10 and a converted rank score. With Subject Tests gone, estimators like this one count the SAT component twice and add a GPA or rank score.

What is a good Academic Index score?+

Higher is better and the maximum is 240. On this estimate a 1500 SAT with a 3.9 unweighted GPA works out to 228, and a 1300 SAT with a 3.5 GPA to 200. Treat any AI cutoff you read online as informal, since schools do not publish them.

Do colleges other than the Ivy League use the Academic Index?+

The term is most associated with the Ivy League and athletic recruiting, but many selective colleges use similar internal academic ratings that combine grades, course rigor and test scores, each with its own formula.

Does a weighted GPA work in this calculator?+

Use your unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA above 4.0 would overstate the converted rank score, which is capped at 80. If your school reports only weighted grades, class rank may be the better input.
