About the ACT Score Calculator
This ACT score calculator estimates your scale scores from a practice test. Enter how many questions you answered correctly in each section and it converts each raw score to the 1–36 scale, then averages the sections into a composite the same way ACT does, rounding halves up.
It supports the enhanced ACT introduced in 2025 (English 50, Math 45, Reading 36 and optional Science 40 questions, with the composite built from English, Math and Reading) and the legacy format (75/60/40/40 questions with Science in the composite). A STEM score — the rounded average of Math and Science — is shown as well.
For the enhanced ACT, the calculator uses the official raw-to-scale tables from ACT’s National Online Practice Test scoring key. On that form only 40 English, 41 Math, 27 Reading and 34 Science questions are scored — the rest are unscored field-test items — so enter the number of scored questions you got right. Other forms have their own tables, so treat results as an estimate within about ±1 point per section. The legacy option uses representative curves approximated from older published practice tests (ACT has not published a single table that fits every legacy form), so legacy results are rougher, within about ±1–2 points per section.

Formula and method
Each section’s raw score (number of scored questions correct — there is no penalty for wrong answers) is converted to the 1–36 scale. For the enhanced ACT this is an exact lookup in the official conversion tables from ACT’s 2025 National Online Practice Test (for example 30 of 40 English = 24, 30 of 41 Math = 28, 20 of 27 Reading = 25, 25 of 34 Science = 27). For the legacy ACT, representative curves approximated from older practice-test tables are used: Math and Reading about 30 at 83% correct and 26 at 70%, English about 25 at 80% and Science about 24 at 70%, interpolated and rounded.
The composite is the average of the section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number with halves rounded up (a 27.5 average becomes 28). The STEM score is the rounded average of Math and Science. Actual tables differ slightly between test dates.

Worked examples
Enhanced ACT practice test
On the official conversion table, 30 of 40 scored English questions = 24, 30 of 41 Math = 28 and 20 of 27 Reading = 25. Their average is 25.67, which rounds to a composite of 26. Science 25 of 34 = 27, so the STEM score (Math and Science) is 27.5, rounded up to 28.
Legacy ACT with Science in the composite
Using the approximate legacy curves, 60/75 English (80%) ≈ 25, 45/60 Math ≈ 27, 30/40 Reading ≈ 27 and 28/40 Science (70%) ≈ 24. The four-section average of 25.75 rounds to 26.
Around the national average
On the enhanced table, 23 of 40 English = 19, 21 of 41 Math = 20 and 14 of 27 Reading = 18. The average is exactly 19, matching the national average composite of 19.1 that ACT reports for recent graduates. Science 18 of 34 = 22 gives a STEM score of 21.
Frequently asked questions
How is the ACT composite score calculated?+
The composite is the average of your section scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number, with .5 rounding up. On the enhanced ACT it averages English, Math and Reading; on the legacy ACT it also included Science.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the ACT?+
No. Your raw score is simply the number of questions answered correctly, so you should answer every question even if you have to guess.
What changed with the enhanced ACT?+
From 2025 the ACT has fewer questions (English 50, Math 45, Reading 36), more time per question, and Science became optional and no longer counts toward the composite. Some questions in each section are unscored field-test items.
What is a good ACT score?+
ACT reports a national average composite of 19.1 for recent graduates. A 24 is about the 81st percentile, a 28 the 92nd and a 30 the 95th, and highly selective colleges often see middle ranges of 32–35.
Why does my official practice test give a different score?+
Each ACT form has its own raw-to-scale table to adjust for difficulty. The enhanced option uses the table from ACT’s National Online Practice Test and the legacy option uses an approximate curve, so another form can differ by a point or two in some sections.
