About the ATAR Estimator
This ATAR estimator turns Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) scaled study scores into an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank. It builds your aggregate exactly the way the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) does — your scaled English-group score, plus your next best three scaled scores, plus 10% of a fifth and sixth score — and then finds the ATAR that aggregate received in VTAC’s published Aggregate to ATAR table for 2024 or 2025.
It is useful for Year 11 and 12 students setting study-score targets, parents checking what a set of predicted scores might mean, and teachers advising on subject choices. If you already know your aggregate, switch to aggregate mode and enter it directly.
Every year’s table is different because the ATAR is a rank against everyone in your age group, so your real ATAR will not exactly match a past year. Use the adjustment field to test a tougher or easier year (for example −1 aggregate point). The tool uses scaled scores (after VTAC scaling, often shown in scaling reports), not raw study scores, and it does not check subject-combination restrictions. NSW HSC and other states use different aggregates.
With the default inputs, the estimated atar is 84.65. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the atar estimator
- 1Enter your scaled English-group score (English, Literature, English Language or EAL).
- 2Enter scaled scores for up to five other subjects — use 0 if you have fewer.
- 3Pick the 2025 or 2024 VTAC table, or switch to aggregate mode if you know your aggregate.
- 4Optionally shift the table to test a tougher or easier year.
- 5Read your estimated ATAR and how much more aggregate the next whole ATAR needs.
Formula and method
VTAC adds your scaled score in one English-group subject (English, English Language, Literature or EAL) to your next three best permissible scaled scores — the “primary four”. It then adds 10% of a fifth and sixth scaled score where available. The total is your ATAR aggregate; because scaled scores can exceed 50, VTAC’s table runs up to an aggregate of 230, and an ATAR of 99.95 needed about 211 or more in 2024 and 2025.
VTAC ranks every aggregate against the whole Victorian age cohort and publishes an Aggregate to ATAR table each December, listing the aggregate range for every ATAR from 30.00 to 99.95 in steps of 0.05. This estimator stores the 2024 and 2025 tables and looks up the highest ATAR whose minimum aggregate your aggregate meets. The optional adjustment shifts every threshold up or down to model a harder or easier year.

Worked examples
Typical VCE scaled scores (2025 table)
English 35 + the best three others (38, 33, 32) = 138 for the primary four, plus 10% of 30 and 28 = 5.8, for an aggregate of 143.80. In the 2025 VTAC table aggregates from 143.73 to 143.80 earned an ATAR of 84.65; ATAR 85.00 needed 144.45, so 0.65 more aggregate points.
Aggregate of 155.6 with the 2024 table
In the 2024 VTAC table an aggregate of 155.60 sits in the 155.50–155.61 band, an ATAR of 90.25. ATAR 91.00 needed 157.43 (1.83 more). In the 2025 table the same aggregate earned only 90.15 — thresholds move every year.
Strong student (2025 table)
Primary four: 45 + 50 + 46 + 44 = 185; increments: 0.1 × (42 + 40) = 8.2; aggregate 193.20. In the 2025 table the 99.05 band runs from 192.55 to 193.20, so this lands exactly at the top of ATAR 99.05 — 0.01 more would reach 99.10.
Testing a tougher year (+2 adjustment)
An aggregate of 150 earned 87.75 in 2025. If every threshold rose by 2 points, it would be treated like 148.00, which falls in the 86.80 band (147.93–148.01). Reaching 87.00 would then need 150.31.
Frequently asked questions
How is the VCE ATAR aggregate calculated?+
VTAC adds your scaled English-group score and your next three best scaled scores, then adds 10% of your fifth and sixth scaled scores. The resulting aggregate is converted to an ATAR using that year’s Aggregate to ATAR table.
What aggregate do I need for a 90 ATAR?+
In the 2025 VTAC table an ATAR of 90.00 required an aggregate of 155.19; in 2024 it was 154.85. The exact threshold changes each year because the ATAR is a rank, not a score.
Are study scores the same as scaled scores?+
No. Your VCAA study score (out of 50) is scaled by VTAC to adjust for the strength of the cohort in each subject. Some subjects scale up and others down; the ATAR aggregate uses the scaled scores.
Can this estimate an NSW HSC or QCE ATAR?+
Not accurately. Each state builds its aggregate differently (NSW uses the best 10 units of scaled marks, for example) and publishes its own conversion. This tool uses the Victorian VTAC method and tables.
Why might my real ATAR differ from this estimate?+
Your ATAR depends on how your aggregate ranks against the whole age cohort in your year, and subject-combination rules can limit which scores count. Past tables are a guide, not a guarantee.
