About the IB Diploma Score Calculator

This IB score calculator adds up a Diploma Programme result the way the International Baccalaureate does: six subject grades from 1 to 7 (up to 42 points) plus up to 3 core points from the theory of knowledge (TOK) and extended essay (EE) matrix, for a maximum of 45. Enter predicted or final grades, mark each subject as higher level (HL) or standard level (SL), and pick your TOK and EE letter grades.

A total of 24 is not enough on its own. The calculator also checks the published failing conditions — no grade 1, no more than two grade 2s, no more than three grades of 3 or below, at least 12 HL points and 9 SL points (5 SL points if you take four HL subjects), no E in TOK or EE, no N grades and completed CAS — and lists exactly which rule you would miss.

The rules follow the diploma requirement codes and TOK/EE matrix in the IB’s Diploma Programme Assessment procedures (unchanged for the 2025 and 2026 sessions). Students use it to see which predicted grades a university offer of 32 or 38 points really requires; teachers and coordinators use it to sanity-check predictions. The bilingual diploma and the rare academic-misconduct penalty are not modelled, and the IB itself issues the official result.

With the default inputs, the ib diploma total is 35 / 45. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the ib diploma score calculator

  1. 1Enter your predicted or final grade (1–7) for each of the six subjects.
  2. 2Mark each subject as higher level (HL) or standard level (SL).
  3. 3Pick your theory of knowledge and extended essay letter grades.
  4. 4Confirm whether your CAS requirements are complete.
  5. 5Read your total out of 45 and the list of any pass conditions you would miss.

Formula and method

Total = Σ subject grades (1–7, six subjects) + Core points (TOK × EE matrix, 0–3)

Each of the six subjects earns a grade from 1 to 7, and HL and SL subjects carry the same points, so subjects contribute up to 42. TOK and the extended essay are graded A–E and combined through the IB matrix: A/A, A/B and B/A give 3 points; A/C, A/D, B/B, B/C, C/A, C/B and D/A give 2; B/D, C/C and D/B give 1; C/D, D/C and D/D give 0. An E in either component, or an N in anything, is a failing condition rather than a score.

The diploma requires at least 24 points and none of the failing conditions: no grade 1, fewer than three grade 2s, fewer than four grades of 3 or below, at least 12 points on HL subjects (best three when four are taken), at least 9 points on SL subjects (5 points when only two SL subjects are taken) and completed CAS. The calculator checks each condition and lists the ones that fail.

Worked examples

Typical 35-point diploma

HL grades 6, 6 and 5 give 17 points and SL grades 6, 5 and 5 give 16, so subjects total 33. TOK B with EE B is worth 2 core points on the matrix, giving 35 out of 45 with every condition met.

Top student aiming for 42

Subjects add to 7 + 7 + 6 + 7 + 6 + 6 = 39. An A in both TOK and EE earns the maximum 3 core points, so the total is 42 out of 45.

31 points but a grade 1

The points add to 29 + 2 = 31, comfortably above 24, and HL (14) and SL (15) both clear their minimums. But a grade 1 in any subject is a failing condition on its own, so the diploma would not be awarded.

E on the extended essay

An E in the extended essay earns no core points, leaving 33 subject points. More importantly, an E in TOK or EE is a failing condition, so the diploma is not awarded despite the 33 points.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum IB score?+

The maximum is 45 points: six subjects graded 1 to 7 give up to 42 points, and the theory of knowledge and extended essay together add up to 3 core points through the IB matrix.

What is the minimum score to pass the IB Diploma?+

You need at least 24 points, and you must also avoid every failing condition — for example a grade 1, three or more grade 2s, fewer than 12 HL points, an E in TOK or EE, or incomplete CAS.

How do TOK and EE points work?+

TOK and the extended essay are each graded A to E. The IB combines the two grades in a matrix: two A grades or an A with a B give 3 points, while two D grades give 0. An E in either one means the diploma cannot be awarded.

Do HL subjects count for more points than SL?+

No. A 7 at higher level and a 7 at standard level are both worth 7 points. HL matters for the separate rule that your best three HL grades must add up to at least 12 points.

Can I fail the IB with more than 24 points?+

Yes. A student can score 30 or more and still miss the diploma because of a failing condition such as a grade 1, an E on the extended essay or incomplete CAS. You still receive DP course results for each subject.

What is a good IB score?+

Selective universities often ask for 34–40 points, sometimes with specific HL grades such as 6, 6, 6. Check each course’s offer because requirements vary widely by university and subject.
