About the UCAS Tariff Points Calculator
This UCAS Tariff points calculator adds up the points your qualifications are worth for university entry in the UK. Choose your A level grades, any standalone AS levels, your Extended Project (EPQ) grade, a BTEC National qualification and — if you study in Scotland — your Highers and Advanced Highers, and it totals your Tariff points with a breakdown by qualification.
It is for Year 12 and 13 students checking predicted grades against course entry requirements, and for parents and advisers comparing mixed qualification profiles. Point values come from the official UCAS Tariff tables for 2027 entry (A* = 56, A = 48, B = 40, C = 32, D = 24, E = 16 for an A level; EPQ A* = 28; Scottish Higher A = 33; Advanced Higher A = 56).
Remember that many universities make grade-based offers (for example AAB) rather than points offers, and a university does not have to accept a qualification just because it carries Tariff points. Points from an AS level taken in the same subject as a full A level are not normally added on top — enter only standalone AS levels.
With the default inputs, the total ucas tariff points is 152. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the ucas tariff points calculator
- 1Choose your achieved or predicted grade for each A level.

Formula and method
Each qualification is looked up in the official UCAS Tariff tables and the points are added together. A levels are worth A* 56, A 48, B 40, C 32, D 24 and E 16; standalone AS levels A 20, B 16, C 12, D 10, E 6; the Extended Project A* 28 down to E 8. Scottish Highers score A 33, B 27, C 21, D 15 and Advanced Highers A 56, B 48, C 40, D 32.
UCAS sets BTEC points by multiplying a grade band (D* 14, D 12, M 8, P 4) by a size band: 2 for the Certificate, 4 for the Extended Certificate, 6 for the Foundation Diploma, and 4 per grade for the Diploma (two grades) and Extended Diploma (three grades). So a D*D*D* Extended Diploma is 3 × 14 × 4 = 168 points, the same as A*A*A* at A level.
- Grade band
- UCAS value for the grade achieved
- Size band
- UCAS multiplier for the size of the qualification
Worked examples
ABB at A level plus an A in the EPQ
A (48) + B (40) + B (40) = 128 A level points, and an EPQ at grade A adds 24, for 152 UCAS points. Expressed as three A levels, 152 points is the same as A*AA.
BTEC Extended Diploma DDM
An Extended Diploma is graded three times with a size band of 4: Distinction (12 × 4 = 48) + Distinction (48) + Merit (8 × 4 = 32) = 128 points, the same as ABB (or AAC) at A level.
Mixed A levels and a BTEC Extended Certificate
A* (56) + B (40) = 96 A level points, a standalone AS at C adds 12, and a Distinction* in a BTEC Extended Certificate (14 × 4) adds 56, totalling 164 UCAS points.
Scottish Highers AAABB plus one Advanced Higher
Three Highers at A (3 × 33 = 99) and two at B (2 × 27 = 54) give 153 points; an Advanced Higher at B adds 48, for 201 UCAS points.
Frequently asked questions
How many UCAS points is an A* at A level?+
An A* at A level is worth 56 UCAS Tariff points. An A is 48, B is 40, C is 32, D is 24 and E is 16, so A*A*A* totals 168 points.
How many UCAS points is the EPQ worth?+
The Extended Project Qualification is worth half an A level: A* = 28, A = 24, B = 20, C = 16, D = 12 and E = 8 UCAS points.
How many UCAS points is a BTEC Extended Diploma?+
A BTEC National Extended Diploma is worth from 48 points (PPP) to 168 points (D*D*D*). Each Distinction* is 56, Distinction 48, Merit 32 and Pass 16 points.
Do AS levels count if I also take the full A level?+
Normally not. When you complete the full A level in a subject, the AS in the same subject is not counted separately — only standalone AS levels add points.
Do all universities use UCAS points?+
No. Many universities, especially selective ones, make grade-based offers such as AAB. Points offers are more common where applicants have a mix of qualifications. Always check the course entry requirements.
How many UCAS points is a Scottish Higher?+
A Scottish Higher is worth 33 points at grade A, 27 at B, 21 at C and 15 at D. An Advanced Higher is worth 56, 48, 40 and 32 points for grades A to D.
