About the SGPA & CGPA Calculator (India)

This SGPA calculator computes your Semester Grade Point Average from the credits and grade points of each subject, exactly as Indian universities following the UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) do — VTU, Anna University, AKTU, Mumbai University, SPPU and most autonomous colleges use the same credit-weighted average. Enter up to eight subjects for the current semester and the calculator returns your SGPA, total credits and credit points.

To get your CGPA, list your earlier semesters as "SGPA, credits" — one per line. The calculator weights every semester by its credits and adds the current one, so a heavy 26-credit semester counts more than a light 18-credit one. That is the method prescribed in the UGC CBCS guidelines.

Grade points are entered as numbers so the tool works with any university’s letter scheme. On the UGC scale, O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4 and F = 0. A failed subject still counts its credits with zero points until you clear it, which is why one F can pull an SGPA down sharply.

With the default inputs, the semester sgpa is 8.65. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the sgpa & cgpa calculator (india)

  1. 1Enter the credits for each subject from your syllabus or grade card.
  2. 2Enter the grade point earned in each subject (O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8 …).
  3. 3Set unused subject rows to 0 credits.
  4. 4List previous semesters as “SGPA, credits”, one per line, to get your CGPA.
  5. 5Read your SGPA, CGPA and the typical class it corresponds to.

Formula and method

SGPA = Σ(Cᵢ × Gᵢ) ÷ ΣCᵢ; CGPA = Σ(SGPAⱼ × Creditsⱼ) ÷ ΣCreditsⱼ

For each subject, multiply its credits (Cᵢ) by the grade point you earned (Gᵢ) to get credit points. SGPA is the total credit points divided by the total credits registered in the semester, so a 4-credit theory paper weighs four times as much as a 1-credit lab.

CGPA follows the same idea across semesters: multiply each semester’s SGPA by that semester’s credits, add them up, and divide by the total credits. This is the formula set out in the UGC CBCS guidelines; results are usually reported to two decimal places. Failed (F) subjects count with zero points until you pass them.

Cᵢ
Credits of subject i
Gᵢ
Grade point earned in subject i (0–10)
SGPAⱼ
SGPA of semester j
Creditsⱼ
Total credits of semester j

Worked examples

Six-subject semester with two past semesters

Credit points: 4×9 + 4×8 + 3×10 + 3×7 + 2×9 + 1×10 = 147 over 17 credits, an SGPA of 8.65. Adding semester 1 (8.1 × 22 = 178.2) and semester 2 (8.45 × 24 = 202.8) gives 528 points over 63 credits — a CGPA of 8.38.

First semester with one failed subject

4×8 + 4×0 + 3×7 + 3×9 + 2×10 + 1×9 = 109 credit points over 17 credits gives an SGPA of 6.41. The failed 4-credit subject contributes zero points but its credits still count, costing nearly two full grade points.

Final-year CGPA from seven semesters

The final semester earns 3×9 + 3×9 + 3×8 + 3×8 + 6×10 = 162 points over 18 credits (SGPA 9.00). The seven earlier semesters total 1,297.4 credit points over 154 credits; adding the final semester gives 1,459.4 ÷ 172 = a CGPA of 8.48.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?+

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) covers the subjects of one semester only. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines every semester completed so far, weighting each semester by its total credits.

How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?+

Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits of all semesters. A simple average of SGPAs is only correct when every semester has the same number of credits.

How do I convert SGPA or CGPA to percentage?+

It depends on your university. Some engineering universities use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, CBSE uses × 9.5 and many universities simply multiply by 10. Use the CGPA to percentage calculator and choose your university’s formula.

Does a failed subject count in SGPA?+

Yes. On the UGC CBCS scale an F (and Ab, absent) carries zero grade points, and universities count its credits, which lowers the SGPA. The student must reappear in the exam; how the new grade replaces the F on later grade cards depends on your university’s rules.

What is a good CGPA in India?+

Most universities treat 7.5 or above as first class with distinction, 6.5–7.49 as first class and 5.5–6.49 as second class, though exact cutoffs vary. Check your own university’s ordinance for the exact class boundaries.
