About the Grade Calculator
This weighted grade calculator shows your current grade in a class the way your teacher’s gradebook computes it. Enter your average score and the syllabus weight for each category — homework, quizzes, tests, labs, projects, participation — and it returns your weighted percentage and letter grade.
Categories you have not been graded on yet can be left at 0% weight; the calculator divides by the weight completed so far, so your mid-semester grade is accurate. It then tells you what average you need on the remaining weight to finish with your target grade.
Letter grades use the common US scale (A 90+, B 80+, C 70+, D 60+) with optional plus/minus bands. Scores above 100% are allowed for extra credit.
With the default inputs, the current weighted grade is 85.13%. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the grade calculator
- 1Find the category weights in your syllabus (e.g. homework 20%, exams 50%).
- 2Enter your average score in each category that has grades so far.
- 3Leave the weight at 0% for categories with no grades yet.
- 4Set a target grade to see what you need on the remaining work.
- 5Read your weighted grade, letter grade and category breakdown.
Formula and method
A weighted grade multiplies each category’s average score by its weight, adds those products and divides by the total weight graded so far. Dividing by the completed weight (instead of 100) gives your true current standing before every category has grades.
The “needed” figure treats the ungraded weight as one block: it finds the average score that, multiplied by the remaining weight, adds enough points to reach your target. Enter each category as an average percentage; if your class uses total points instead of weights, the percentage of points earned is your grade.
- scoreᵢ
- Average percentage in category i
- weightᵢ
- Share of the course grade for category i (percent)
- Target
- Final course grade you want
Worked examples
Mid-semester with four categories graded
Homework 92 × 20 + quizzes 85 × 15 + midterm 78 × 25 + project 88 × 15 = 6,385, divided by the 75% graded so far = 85.13% (a B). To finish at 85% you need (85 − 63.85) ÷ 0.25 = 84.6% on the remaining 25%.
All categories complete
95 × 10 + 88 × 20 + 82 × 30 + 90 × 10 + 76 × 30 = 8,350, and ÷ 100 gives 83.5% — a B on the plus/minus scale. With all weight graded, no remaining work is needed.
Simple letter scale, early in term
Only homework (78 × 15) and quizzes (70 × 10) are graded: 1,870 ÷ 25 = 74.8%, a C. Reaching 80% overall needs (80 − 18.7) ÷ 0.75 ≈ 81.7% across the remaining 75% of the course.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my weighted grade?+
Multiply each category’s average by its weight, add the results, and divide by the sum of the weights graded so far. For example, 90% in a category worth 40 and 80% in one worth 60: (90 × 40 + 80 × 60) ÷ 100 = 8,400 ÷ 100 = 84%.
What if my class uses points instead of weights?+
In a total-points system your grade is simply points earned ÷ points possible. You can enter it as a single category with 100% weight, or use each category’s point share as its weight.
Why is my grade different from the online gradebook?+
Gradebooks may drop the lowest scores, treat missing work as zero, or round categories before weighting. Check that your category averages and weights match the syllabus.
What percentage is a B+?+
On the common US scale a B+ is 87–89.99%, a B is 83–86.99% and a B− is 80–82.99%. Some schools use different cutoffs, such as a 10-point scale without plus/minus.
Can a grade go above 100%?+
Yes, if extra credit pushes category scores above 100%. The calculator accepts scores up to 150% and weights them normally.
