About the Satoshi Converter
This satoshi converter translates between the units people actually use for Bitcoin: whole BTC, satoshis (sats), bits (μBTC), millibitcoin (mBTC) and your local currency. Formula and method
A satoshi is the smallest unit recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain: exactly 0.00000001 BTC, so one bitcoin is 100 million sats. A bit (μBTC) is one millionth of a bitcoin (100 sats) and a millibitcoin (mBTC) is one thousandth (100,000 sats). These ratios are fixed by the protocol.
The fiat value multiplies the BTC amount by the price you enter; converting from fiat divides by the price. Sats per dollar is simply 100,000,000 ÷ price, a popular way to track how much bitcoin a dollar buys.

Worked examples
0.005 BTC at $100,000
0.005 × 100,000,000 = 500,000 sats. At $100,000 per BTC that is worth $500, or 5,000 bits and 5 mBTC. Each dollar buys 1,000 sats.
21,000 sats to BTC and dollars
21,000 ÷ 100,000,000 = 0.00021 BTC. At $100,000 per coin that is $21.
$250 of Bitcoin at $65,000
$250 ÷ $65,000 = 0.003846 BTC, which is about 384,615 sats. At that price each dollar buys roughly 1,538 sats.

How many sats are in one bitcoin?+
Exactly 100,000,000 satoshis make one bitcoin. One satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC, the smallest amount the Bitcoin blockchain records.
Why is it called a satoshi?+
The unit is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous author of the 2008 Bitcoin whitepaper. The name was adopted by the community rather than defined in the original software.
What is the difference between bits, mBTC and sats?+
A bit (μBTC) is 100 sats or one millionth of a bitcoin; an mBTC is 100,000 sats or one thousandth of a bitcoin. Sats have become the most common small unit, especially in Lightning wallets.
How many sats does $1 buy?+
Divide 100,000,000 by the BTC price. At $100,000 per BTC one dollar buys 1,000 sats; at $50,000 it buys 2,000 sats.
Can I send less than one satoshi?+
Not on-chain. The Lightning Network accounts in millisatoshis (thousandths of a sat) for routing, but on-chain transactions and final settlement use whole sats, and very small outputs are rejected as dust.
