About the India Crypto Tax Calculator

This India crypto tax calculator works out the income tax on profits from selling or swapping cryptocurrency, NFTs and other virtual digital assets (VDAs) for tax year 2026-27 (assessment year 2027-28). Enter the sale value, what you paid for the asset, your other income and your tax regime, and it returns the 30% VDA tax, any surcharge, the 4% health and education cess, the 1% TDS already deducted by the exchange and the balance you still owe.

Since 1 April 2026 the rules sit in the Income-tax Act, 2025: section 194(1) (Table, Sl. No. 4) taxes any income from transferring a VDA at a flat 30%, carrying over the old section 115BBH. No deduction is allowed except the cost of acquisition. Exchange fees, gas fees and other expenses are not deductible, and a loss on one VDA cannot be set off against gains on another or against any other income, nor carried forward. TDS of 1% on the sale consideration (section 393(1), Table Sl. No. 8(vi), formerly section 194S) is a credit against your final tax, not an extra tax.

The calculator handles one sale, or the combined profitable sales of a year. Enter each loss-making trade separately — those losses give no relief. Surcharge is applied at the rate set by your total income (10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore, and 37% above ₹5 crore under the old regime) without marginal relief, so results just above a threshold are slightly overstated. Business traders and residents with unusual situations should confirm with a chartered accountant.

With the default inputs, the total tax on crypto gain is ₹62,400.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the india crypto tax calculator

  1. 1Enter the sale value you received and what you originally paid for that crypto.
  2. 2Enter fees paid (they are not deductible, but affect your real profit).
  3. 3Enter your other taxable income and choose your tax regime for the surcharge.
  4. 4Turn on the TDS toggle if 1% TDS was deducted on the sale.
  5. 5Read the total tax and the balance still payable after the TDS credit.

Formula and method

Tax = 30% × max(0, Sale − Cost) × (1 + surcharge rate) × 1.04; TDS = 1% × Sale; Balance = Tax − TDS

VDA income is the sale consideration minus the cost of acquisition only — no deduction is allowed for fees, interest or any other expense. That income is taxed at a flat 30% regardless of your slab, then surcharge is added based on your total income, and 4% cess is charged on tax plus surcharge.

The buyer or exchange deducts TDS of 1% of the sale consideration when you sell, subject to annual thresholds (₹50,000 for specified individual and HUF payers, ₹10,000 for others). The TDS appears in your Form 26AS/AIS and is credited against your total tax when you file, so the balance payable is total tax minus TDS. Loss-making transfers produce zero tax and the loss is ignored entirely.

Worked examples

₹5 lakh sale of crypto bought for ₹3 lakh

The ₹2,00,000 gain is taxed at 30% (₹60,000) plus 4% cess (₹2,400), for ₹62,400. The exchange already deducted 1% of ₹5,00,000 as TDS (₹5,000), so ₹57,400 is still payable. After ₹2,000 of non-deductible fees, you keep ₹1,35,600 of profit.

Loss-making sale with TDS

Selling for ₹1,00,000 what cost ₹1,50,000 creates no tax, but the ₹50,000 loss cannot be set off or carried forward. The ₹1,000 TDS deducted is claimed back as a credit or refund in your return.

Large gain pushing income above ₹1 crore

A ₹40 lakh gain plus ₹70 lakh other income makes total income ₹1.1 crore, so a 15% surcharge applies. Tax is ₹12,00,000 + ₹1,80,000 surcharge + ₹55,200 cess = ₹14,35,200, an effective 35.88% of the gain. After ₹50,000 of TDS, ₹13,85,200 remains payable.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on crypto in India?+

Gains from transferring crypto and other virtual digital assets are taxed at a flat 30%, plus 4% cess and any surcharge that applies to your income. That is 31.2% of the gain for most people, regardless of the income tax slab you fall in.

Can I set off crypto losses against gains in India?+

No. A loss on transferring one VDA cannot be set off against gains on another VDA, against any other income, or carried forward to later years. Each profitable transfer is taxed on its own gain.

What is 1% TDS on crypto?+

When you sell or swap crypto, the buyer — usually the Indian exchange — deducts 1% of the sale consideration as TDS and deposits it with the government. It is not an extra tax: it appears in your Form 26AS/AIS and is credited against your final tax, or refunded if it exceeds the tax due.

Are exchange fees and gas fees deductible?+

No. The law allows only the cost of acquisition to be deducted from the sale consideration when computing VDA income. Trading fees, gas fees, internet costs and interest on borrowed money cannot be deducted.

Is a crypto-to-crypto swap taxable in India?+

Yes. Exchanging one VDA for another is a transfer, so the gain is the market value of what you receive minus the cost of what you gave up. TDS rules also apply to swaps, with the payer required to ensure the tax is paid.

Which ITR schedule do I report crypto in?+

VDA gains are reported in Schedule VDA of the income tax return, with dates of acquisition and transfer, cost and consideration for each transfer. Taxpayers with business income from crypto trading report it under business income but still at the 30% rate.
