About the Korean Age Calculator
This Korean age calculator shows the three ways age has been counted in South Korea. Traditional Korean age (세는 나이) starts at 1 on the day you are born and adds a year to everyone every 1 January. “Year age” (연 나이) is simply the current year minus your birth year. International age (만 나이) is the standard count used almost everywhere else: 0 at birth, plus one on each birthday.
It is handy for K-pop and K-drama fans decoding profiles, travellers and students heading to Korea, and anyone filling in a form that asks for a specific kind of age. Enter your date of birth and the date you want to check; the calculator explains why your Korean age is one or two years higher than your international age and when each number goes up.
Since 28 June 2023, South Korean law uses international age by default for official and legal purposes. Year age is still used for a few rules such as military service and the youth protection laws on alcohol and tobacco, while counting age remains common in everyday conversation. The same counting system was traditionally used in China, Japan and Vietnam.
With the default inputs, the korean age (counting age, 세는 나이) is 32. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the korean age calculator

- 4Check the table to see how each age changes over the next ten years.
Formula and method
Korean counting age treats a newborn as 1 year old and adds one year for everyone on 1 January, so it depends only on the calendar year, not on the birthday. Year age drops the extra starting year and is also the same all year round. International age counts completed years since birth, so it goes up on the birthday itself.
As a result, Korean age is always 1 or 2 years higher than international age: 2 years between 1 January and the day before your birthday, and 1 year from your birthday to 31 December. For someone born on 29 February, the calculator moves the birthday to 1 March in common years. Historical lunar-calendar reckoning (adding a year at Lunar New Year) is not used.
- Korean age
- 세는 나이 — counting age, 1 at birth, +1 every 1 January
- Year age
- 연 나이 — current year minus birth year
- International age
- 만 나이 — full years since birth, the legal standard in Korea since June 2023
Worked examples
Born 15 August 1995, checked on 29 September 2026
2026 − 1995 + 1 = 32 in Korean age and 2026 − 1995 = 31 in year age. The August birthday has already passed, so international age is also 31; the next birthday is 320 days away on 15 August 2027.
Born 31 December 2025, checked on 1 January 2026
A baby born on New Year’s Eve is 1 in Korean age at birth and turns 2 the next day, on 1 January — while still 0 in international age. That is the largest possible gap between the two systems.
Born 10 November 2004, checked on 5 March 2026
In March 2026 the November birthday is still ahead, so international age is 21 while Korean age is 23 — a 2-year gap. Year age, used for Korea’s youth protection rules, is 22.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate Korean age?+
Take the current year, subtract your birth year and add 1. Someone born in 2000 is 27 in Korean age for the whole of 2026, no matter when their birthday falls.
Does South Korea still use Korean age?+
Not officially. A law that took effect on 28 June 2023 made international age (만 나이) the default for legal and administrative purposes. Counting age is still heard in daily life, and year age remains in a few laws such as military service and youth protection.
Why is Korean age 1 or 2 years older?+
Korean age starts at 1 at birth instead of 0, which adds one year, and it rises every 1 January instead of on your birthday, which adds a second year until your birthday arrives.
What is year age (연 나이)?+
Year age is the current year minus your birth year. It ignores the birthday and is used for things like the legal drinking and smoking age in Korea, where everyone born in the same year becomes eligible on 1 January.
What is my age for K-pop idol profiles?+
Older fan profiles and Korean media often listed Korean age, so an idol shown as “25” may be 23 or 24 in international age. Use the date of birth with this calculator to compare them directly.
