About the Age Difference Calculator
This age difference calculator works out the exact gap between two people’s birthdays. Enter both dates of birth and it returns the difference in calendar years, months and days — the way people naturally describe it — along with the same gap expressed as total months, weeks, days and decimal years.
Couples use it to settle the “how much older are you exactly?” question, parents use it to plan the spacing between siblings, and genealogists use it to compare relatives across generations. It also tells you how old the older person was on the day the younger one was born, and both people’s ages on any reference date you choose.
The calendar gap counts whole years first, then whole months, then leftover days, borrowing the correct number of days from the relevant month, so leap years and short months are handled properly. The order you enter the two people in does not matter.

Formula and method
The calendar gap is found by counting whole years from the earlier birthday, then whole months, then the remaining days. When the day of the month of the later date is smaller, one month is borrowed and the number of days in the preceding month is added, so February and 30-day months are handled correctly.
Total days is the exact count of days between the two dates. Decimal years divide that by 365.2425, the average length of a Gregorian year, and weeks divide it by 7.

Worked examples
A couple born four and a half years apart
From 12 April 1990 to 30 September 1994 is 4 full years (to 12 April 1994), 5 months (to 12 September) and 18 days. That is 1,632 days, or about 4.47 years.
Siblings 15 years apart, entered youngest first
Leo, born 25 December 1985, is older. Counting 15 years brings us to 25 December 2000, 2 more months to 25 February 2001, and 4 days (February 2001 had 28 days) to 1 March — 5,545 days in total.
Leap-day birthday
Someone born on 29 February 2000 and someone born on 28 February 2003 are 1,095 days apart — one day short of three calendar years, because 29 February does not exist in 2003.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the age difference between two people?+
Subtract the earlier birth date from the later one, counting whole years first, then whole months, then the remaining days. The calculator does this automatically and also gives the gap in total days and weeks.
Does the age gap change over time?+
No. The difference between two birth dates is fixed forever. What changes is the ratio: a 5-year gap is huge between a 5- and 10-year-old but small between people aged 50 and 55.
What is the “half your age plus seven” rule?+
It is a popular rule of thumb for the youngest socially acceptable partner age: divide your age by two and add seven. For a 40-year-old that gives 27. It is a cultural guideline, not a scientific or legal standard.
Why are decimal years different from the calendar gap?+
Decimal years divide the exact number of days by 365.2425, while the calendar gap counts real months of 28 to 31 days. Both are correct; they are just different ways of expressing the same interval.
How are leap-day birthdays handled?+
Dates are treated as real calendar dates, so 29 February only exists in leap years. The gap from 29 February to 28 February three years later is 2 years, 11 months and 30 days.
