About the Time Zone Converter

This time zone converter takes a date and clock time in one place — say 9:00 AM in New York — and tells you exactly what time and date it is in another city at that same moment. It uses the official IANA time zone database built into your browser, so daylight saving time (DST) transitions, half-hour zones like India and Newfoundland, and regions that never change their clocks, such as Arizona or Queensland, are all handled correctly for the specific date you pick.

Use it to schedule a call with a client overseas, work out when a webinar or product launch starts where you live, check an airline arrival time, or confirm a deadline written in UTC. The results also show both UTC offsets and the hour difference between the two places, and a table lists the same moment in more than 40 major cities.

Because DST rules vary by country — the US and Europe switch on different weekends in spring and autumn — the gap between two cities is not constant through the year. Always convert with the actual date rather than assuming a fixed difference. Rules also change: British Columbia made its last clock change on 8 March 2026 and stays on UTC−7 year-round from 1 November 2026, so from that winter Vancouver is one hour ahead of Los Angeles. The converter applies that rule itself, even in browsers whose built-in time zone data predates it.

How to use the time zone converter

  1. 1Pick the date of the meeting or event — offsets change with daylight saving time.
  2. 2Enter the time as it is in the source location using the 24-hour clock.
  3. 3Choose the source time zone, then the destination time zone.
  4. 4Read the converted time and date; a note tells you if the day changes.
  5. 5Scan the table to see the same moment in 40+ other major cities.

Formula and method

Destination time = Source time − Source UTC offset + Destination UTC offset

Every time zone is defined by its offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on a given date. The converter first turns your local time into UTC by subtracting the source offset (for example 09:00 in New York at UTC−4 becomes 13:00 UTC), then adds the destination offset (London at UTC+1 gives 14:00).

Offsets are looked up for the exact instant from the IANA tz database, so daylight saving time is applied only when it is actually in force in each place. If the time you enter falls in a spring-forward gap that does not exist locally, it is moved forward to the first valid time.

UTC offset
Hours and minutes a zone is ahead (+) or behind (−) UTC on that date
DST
Daylight saving time, usually +1 hour in summer

Worked examples

9:00 AM New York to London in October

On 15 October 2026 New York is on daylight time (UTC−4) and London on British Summer Time (UTC+1). 09:00 in New York is 13:00 UTC, which is 14:00 in London — five hours ahead.

5 PM Los Angeles to Tokyo (crosses midnight)

US clocks sprang forward on 8 March 2026, so Los Angeles is at UTC−7. 17:00 there is 00:00 UTC on 21 March, and Tokyo (UTC+9, no DST) is 09:00 the next morning — 16 hours ahead.

10:30 AM India to New York in winter

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year and New York is on EST (UTC−5) in January. 10:30 IST is 05:00 UTC, which is midnight in New York, 10½ hours behind.

The March DST gap: New York to London

The US moves to daylight time three weeks before the UK (29 March 2026). In that window New York is UTC−4 while London is still UTC+0, so the usual five-hour gap shrinks to four: noon in New York is 16:00 in London.

Vancouver to Los Angeles after B.C.’s permanent time change

British Columbia did not fall back on 1 November 2026 and stays at UTC−7, while Los Angeles returns to PST (UTC−8). 09:00 in Vancouver is 16:00 UTC, which is 08:00 in Los Angeles — an hour behind, instead of the same time as in previous winters.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours ahead is London from New York?+

Usually five hours. For a few weeks in March and late October/early November the gap is four hours, because the US and UK change their clocks on different weekends.

What is the difference between EST and PST?+

Eastern time is three hours ahead of Pacific time all year: 12:00 noon in New York is 9:00 AM in Los Angeles. Both zones switch to daylight time on the same US dates, so the gap never changes.

How do I convert UTC to EST?+

Subtract five hours from UTC when Eastern Standard Time applies (roughly November to March) and four hours during Eastern Daylight Time. For example 18:00 UTC is 13:00 EST or 14:00 EDT.

Is GMT the same as UTC?+

For everyday scheduling, yes — both have a zero offset. UTC is the precise atomic-clock standard; GMT is also the name of the UK’s winter time zone, and the UK uses BST (UTC+1) in summer.

Which places do not use daylight saving time?+

Most of Asia, Africa and South America, plus Arizona (except the Navajo Nation), Hawaii, Queensland, Saskatchewan, Yukon and — from November 2026 — British Columbia (UTC−7) keep the same offset all year. The converter applies each location’s rules automatically.

Why does India have a half-hour offset?+

India Standard Time is set at UTC+5:30 to split the difference across the country’s width. Nepal (UTC+5:45), Newfoundland (UTC−3:30) and South Australia (UTC+9:30) also use non-whole-hour offsets.
