About the Cost per Credit Hour Calculator

This cost per credit hour calculator turns a term’s tuition bill into the price of a single credit, a single course and a single hour in the classroom. Enter your tuition and mandatory fees for the term, the number of credits you take, and how your classes are scheduled. The calculator also compares flat-rate (banded) tuition with paying per credit, and shows how many credits you need before the flat rate becomes the better deal.

It is useful for students deciding whether to add a class, drop to part time or take summer courses, for adult learners comparing programs priced per credit, and for anyone who wants to know what skipping a lecture actually costs. Many universities charge one flat price for anything between about 12 and 18 credits, which makes each additional credit within that band effectively free.

Lecture-hour figures assume the common US convention of one hour of class per week for each credit over the term (the federal credit-hour definition is based on one hour of classroom instruction plus two hours of out-of-class work per week for about 15 weeks). Labs and studio courses meet longer, so their cost per contact hour is lower.

With the default inputs, the cost per credit hour is $440.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the cost per credit hour calculator

  1. 1Enter the tuition and mandatory fees on your term bill.
  2. 2Enter the credits you are taking and how many credits each class carries.
  3. 3Enter the weeks in the term and how often each class meets.
  4. 4Add a per-credit price to compare, such as your school’s part-time rate.
  5. 5Read the cost per credit, class and hour, and the flat vs per-credit comparison.

Formula and method

Per credit = (tuition + fees) ÷ credits | Per class = per credit × credits per class | Per lecture hour = per credit ÷ weeks

The cost per credit hour spreads the full term bill — tuition plus mandatory fees — evenly over the credits you take. Multiplying by the credits in a course gives the price of that class, and dividing the class price by the number of class meetings in the term (weeks × meetings per week) gives the cost of each session you attend or miss.

Because one credit usually means about one hour of class per week, the cost per lecture hour is the cost per credit divided by the number of weeks in the term. The comparison prices the same credits at a per-credit rate plus the same fees; the break-even point is the flat tuition divided by the per-credit rate.

Worked examples

Flat-rate semester, 15 credits

$6,600 of tuition and fees over 15 credits is $440 per credit, so a 3-credit class costs $1,320 and each of its 30 meetings costs $44. Paying $450 per credit would cost $7,350, so the flat rate saves $750; it wins above 13.3 credits.

Same bill at 12 credits

Taking only 12 credits on the same flat bill raises the cost to $550 per credit. At $450 per credit the same 12 credits would cost $6,000 with fees — $600 less than the flat rate.

Quarter system, 4-credit classes

$4,500 over 12 quarter credits is $375 per credit. A 4-credit class costs $1,500 and meets 30 times in 10 weeks, so each meeting costs $50.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cost per credit hour?+

Add your tuition and mandatory fees for the term, then divide by the number of credits you are taking. For example, $6,600 for 15 credits is $440 per credit hour.

What is flat-rate or banded tuition?+

Many colleges charge one price for a full-time load — often anything from 12 to 18 credits per semester. Within that band each extra credit costs nothing, so taking 15 or more credits lowers your cost per credit and can help you graduate sooner.

How much does it cost to skip a class?+

Divide the cost of the course by the number of times it meets. A $1,320 course that meets twice a week for 15 weeks costs about $44 per session — money spent whether you attend or not.

What is a credit hour?+

In the US a credit hour is generally one hour of classroom instruction and about two hours of out-of-class work each week for roughly 15 weeks, or the equivalent. A typical course is 3 credits, and a full-time load is usually 12 or more credits per semester.

Are quarter credits worth less than semester credits?+

Yes. A quarter credit is about two-thirds of a semester credit, because quarters are shorter. When comparing programs, multiply quarter credits by 2/3 to convert them to semester credits.
