About the Cooking Measurement Converter

This cooking measurement converter translates any kitchen volume into every other common unit at once: US cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, pints, quarts, milliliters and liters. Enter an amount, pick the unit your recipe uses, and read off whichever measure matches the spoons and jugs you actually own.

It is built for home cooks following an American recipe with a metric jug (or the other way round), bakers who need 3/4 cup in tablespoons because the measuring cup is in the dishwasher, and anyone halving or doubling a recipe. The recipe scale field multiplies the amount first, so 1.5 cups × 2 gives you everything for a double batch, and the breakdown line turns awkward results into practical cups + tablespoons + teaspoons.

All figures use US customary measures: 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 8 US fluid ounces = 236.59 ml. A metric cup (250 ml, used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada) is included as a separate unit. This tool converts volume only — to turn cups of flour or sugar into grams, use a cups-to-grams converter, because weight depends on the ingredient.

With the default inputs, the us cups is 2 cups. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the cooking measurement converter

  1. 1Enter the amount from your recipe.
  2. 2Choose the unit the recipe uses — cups, spoons, fl oz, ml or liters.
  3. 3Set the recipe scale if you are doubling (2) or halving (0.5) the recipe.
  4. 4Read the result in the unit you want to measure with.
  5. 5Use the kitchen-measures line for a practical cups + tbsp + tsp combination.

Formula and method

ml = amount × scale × (ml per source unit); result = ml ÷ (ml per target unit)

Every unit is converted through milliliters. The amount is first multiplied by the recipe scale, then by the number of milliliters in the source unit, and finally divided by the milliliters in each target unit. Because the US measures are defined exactly from the US gallon (3.785411784 L), the ratios between spoons and cups are exact.

The US kitchen ladder is: 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons, 1 fluid ounce = 2 tablespoons, 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces = 16 tablespoons, 1 pint = 2 cups, 1 quart = 4 cups and 1 gallon = 16 cups. The breakdown line rounds to the nearest quarter teaspoon, the smallest common measuring spoon.

Worked examples

2 cups of milk

One US cup is 16 tablespoons, 48 teaspoons or 8 fl oz, so 2 cups is 32 tbsp, 96 tsp and 16 fl oz. In metric, 2 × 236.59 ml = 473.18 ml — exactly one US pint.

3 tablespoons of oil

Each tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, so 3 tbsp = 9 tsp. As a fraction of a cup it is 3 ÷ 16 = 0.1875 (3/16 cup), which is 3 × 14.787 ml ≈ 44.36 ml or 1.5 fl oz.

250 ml of stock in US measures

250 ÷ 236.59 = 1.057 US cups, or 16.9 tablespoons. In practice that is one cup plus about 2¾ teaspoons — a metric cup is slightly larger than a US cup.

Doubling 1.5 cups of flour (volume)

The scale factor doubles 1.5 cups to 3 cups before converting. That is 3 × 16 = 48 tablespoons or about 709.8 ml by volume.

Frequently asked questions

How many tablespoons are in a cup?+

There are 16 tablespoons in one US cup, so 1/2 cup is 8 tbsp, 1/3 cup is 5 tbsp + 1 tsp, and 1/4 cup is 4 tbsp.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?+

One US tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons: about 14.79 ml and 4.93 ml respectively. The UK/metric tablespoon is 15 ml (3 × 5 ml teaspoons), but an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml, which equals 4 teaspoons.

How many ml are in a cup?+

A US customary cup holds 236.59 ml (often rounded to 240 ml on nutrition labels). A metric cup used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada is 250 ml, and the old UK imperial cup (half an imperial pint) is about 284 ml.

Are fluid ounces the same as ounces by weight?+

No. Fluid ounces measure volume and ounces measure weight. One US fl oz of water weighs about 1.04 oz, but a fluid ounce of flour weighs roughly half that, so always check which one a recipe means.

Can I convert cups of flour to grams with this tool?+

This converter handles volume only. Grams depend on the ingredient’s density — a cup of flour is about 120–125 g while a cup of sugar is about 200 g — so use an ingredient-specific cups-to-grams converter.

How do I halve a recipe that uses 1/3 cup?+

Set the amount to 0.3333 cups and the scale to 0.5. The result is 1/6 cup, which the breakdown shows as 2 tbsp + 2 tsp — much easier to measure than a sixth of a cup.
