Formula and method
Every unit is stored as its exact size in liters, then the amount is converted to liters and from liters to the target unit. A US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L) and splits into 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups or 128 fluid ounces; a tablespoon is half a fluid ounce and a teaspoon one-third of a tablespoon.
The UK imperial gallon is defined as exactly 4.54609 L and contains 8 imperial pints or 160 imperial fluid ounces. Cubic units come from the exact inch (2.54 cm): 1 ft³ = 28.316846592 L, 1 yd³ = 764.554857984 L, and 1 m³ = 1,000 L.

Worked examples

How many liters are in a gallon?+
A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters, while a UK imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters. Always check which gallon a recipe, fuel figure or tank size refers to.
How many cups are in a liter?+
