Formula and method
Every unit is stored as its size in square meters. The input is multiplied by the "from" unit's factor to get square meters, then divided by the "to" unit's factor. For example, a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m², an acre is 43,560 sq ft = 4,046.8564224 m², and a hectare is exactly 10,000 m².
Because area is length squared, converting area uses the square of the length factor — which is why 1 m² is 10.764 sq ft even though 1 m is only 3.281 ft.

1,000 sq ft apartment in square meters
1,000 × 0.09290304 = 92.90 m². A 1,000 sq ft home is about 93 square meters, or roughly 0.023 acres.
One acre in square feet
An acre is defined as 43,560 square feet, which is 4,046.86 m² or about 0.405 hectares.
One hectare in acres
10,000 m² ÷ 4,046.8564 m² per acre = 2.471 acres. A hectare is about two and a half acres.

Why can't I convert square meters to square feet by multiplying by 3.28?+
Area has two dimensions, so you must square the length factor: 3.2808 × 3.2808 ≈ 10.764. Multiplying by 3.28 would understate the area by more than two thirds.
How many acres are in a square mile?+
A square mile contains exactly 640 acres, or about 259 hectares (2.59 km²).
