About the Square Fee Calculator
This Square fee calculator shows the processing fee Square deducts from a payment and the amount that reaches your bank. Pick how the customer pays — tapping or dipping a card in person, an online checkout, a manually keyed card or card on file, an invoice paid by card or ACH bank transfer, or Afterpay — and your Square plan, and it applies the matching rate.
It is useful for coffee shops, salons, contractors sending invoices and online sellers who want to price services so fees are covered, or compare how much a keyed-in payment costs versus a tapped card. The comparison table shows the fee for the same amount on every payment method, and the reverse figure tells you what to charge to receive a set amount after fees.
Rates are Square’s published US fees as reviewed in October 2026. On the Free plan: in person 2.6% + 15¢, online and card invoices 3.3% + 30¢, keyed or card on file 3.5% + 15¢, ACH invoices 1% with a $1 minimum, and Afterpay 6% + 30¢. Plus and Premium subscriptions lower in-person rates (2.5% and 2.4% + 15¢), online and card invoices (2.9% + 30¢) and cap ACH fees at $10. Custom rates for high-volume sellers are not modeled.
With the default inputs, the square fee is $2.75. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method
Square charges a percentage r of each payment plus a fixed amount f that depends on how the card is taken and your plan. ACH bank-transfer invoices are a flat 1% with a $1 minimum; on the Plus and Premium plans the ACH fee is capped at $10. What you receive is the payment minus the fee.
To work out what to charge so you keep a target amount, solve X − (X × r + f) = A, which gives X = (A + f) ÷ (1 − r). For ACH the minimum or cap is applied instead when it binds. Square deducts fees from each payment before deposit, so the figures match what you see in your Square Dashboard.
- A
- Payment amount (or the amount you want to receive)
- r
- Percentage fee as a decimal
- f
- Fixed fee per payment (15¢ or 30¢)
- X
- Amount to charge to net A after fees
Worked examples
$100 card tapped in person (Free plan)
2.6% of $100 is $2.60, plus 15¢, for a $2.75 fee — you receive $97.25. To net exactly $100 you would charge $100.15 ÷ 0.974 = $102.82. At 300 such payments a month, fees are $825 a month or $9,900 a year.
$250 online order on the Free plan
Online payments on the Free plan cost 3.3% + 30¢: $8.25 + $0.30 = $8.55, leaving $241.45. Charging $258.84 would leave the full $250 after fees.
$2,000 ACH invoice on Plus
ACH invoices are 1%, which would be $20 on $2,000, but Plus caps the ACH fee at $10, so you receive $1,990 — an effective rate of just 0.5%. Ten such invoices cost $100 a month.
$80 keyed-in payment
Manually entered cards and cards on file cost 3.5% + 15¢ on every plan: $2.80 + $0.15 = $2.95. That is 80¢ more than tapping the same card in person.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Square charge per transaction?+
On the Free plan Square charges 2.6% + 15¢ for in-person card payments, 3.3% + 30¢ for online payments and card invoices, and 3.5% + 15¢ for keyed-in cards or cards on file (US rates reviewed October 2026). Plus and Premium plans lower the in-person and online rates.
What is Square’s fee for invoices?+
An invoice paid by card costs 3.3% + 30¢ on the Free plan and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus or Premium. An invoice paid by ACH bank transfer costs 1% with a $1 minimum, and Plus and Premium cap that fee at $10 per payment.
Why are keyed-in payments more expensive?+
When a card is typed in rather than tapped or inserted, the chip cannot be verified, so the risk of fraud and chargebacks is higher. Card networks charge more for card-not-present transactions and Square passes that on as 3.5% + 15¢.
Can I pass Square fees on to customers?+
Many businesses build fees into their prices. Adding a separate credit card surcharge is restricted in some US states and subject to card network rules, and surcharges are not allowed on debit cards, so check local rules before adding one.
Does Square charge a monthly fee?+
The Square Free plan has no monthly fee; you only pay processing fees when you take a payment. Plus and Premium subscriptions add a monthly price in exchange for lower rates and extra features, so compare the subscription price with the rate savings.
