About the Stripe Fee Calculator

This Stripe fee calculator shows how much Stripe keeps from a card payment and how much lands in your account. It also works in reverse: enter the amount you want to receive and it tells you what to charge so the fee is passed on to the customer — useful for invoices, donations and deposits.

The defaults use Stripe’s standard US online card pricing of 2.9% + 30¢ per successful charge, with optional surcharges for international cards (+1.5%) and currency conversion (+1%). If you are on a different country’s pricing, a negotiated rate or a product like Stripe Invoicing or Terminal, just edit the percentage and fixed fee.

Freelancers, SaaS founders and online stores use it to price correctly and forecast monthly processing costs. Before adding a surcharge for card fees, check local rules and card network policies — some US states and countries restrict surcharging.

With the default inputs, the stripe fee is $3.20. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the stripe fee calculator

  1. 1Enter the amount you are charging — or the amount you want to receive.
  2. 2Keep 2.9% + $0.30 or enter your own Stripe rate.
  3. 3Choose domestic or international card.
  4. 4Read the fee and net payout, or use the gross-up amount to pass fees on.
  5. 5Add monthly transactions to forecast total processing costs.

Formula and method

Fee = A × p + F
Net = A − Fee
Charge to receive A = (A + F) ÷ (1 − p)

Stripe charges a percentage of the transaction plus a fixed amount on each successful card payment. The fee is the amount times the combined rate (base rate plus any international or currency-conversion surcharge) plus the fixed fee, and your payout is the amount minus that fee.

To pass the fee to the customer you cannot just add the fee, because Stripe also charges its percentage on the extra you add. Solving Charge − (Charge × p + F) = A gives Charge = (A + F) ÷ (1 − p), the “gross-up” amount that nets exactly A.

A
Charge amount, or the amount you want to receive
p
Percentage rate as a decimal (2.9% = 0.029) including surcharges
F
Fixed fee per transaction ($0.30)

Worked examples

$100 domestic card payment

2.9% of $100 is $2.90, plus $0.30 makes a $3.20 fee, so you receive $96.80. To receive a full $100 you would charge ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. At 200 such payments a month fees total $640.

$250 invoice paid with an international card

With the 1.5% international surcharge the rate is 4.4%: $250 × 0.044 = $11.00 plus $0.30 = $11.30, leaving $238.70. Charging $261.82 would net the full $250.

$20 small ticket, 500 sales a month

$20 × 2.9% = $0.58 plus $0.30 = $0.88 per sale, an effective 4.4% because the fixed fee weighs heavily on small amounts. Across 500 sales that is $440 a month.

Frequently asked questions

What are Stripe’s standard fees?+

In the US, Stripe’s standard pricing for online card payments is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful charge, with an extra 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is required. Other countries have their own rates on Stripe’s pricing page.

How do I pass Stripe fees to the customer?+

Charge (amount + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029). For a $100 invoice that is $103.30. Adding just $3.20 is not enough because Stripe also takes 2.9% of the extra you add. Check local surcharging rules before doing this.

Does Stripe refund fees on refunds?+

Stripe does not return the processing fee when you refund a payment, so a full refund costs you the original fee. Disputes (chargebacks) carry an additional dispute fee.

Why is the effective rate higher on small payments?+

The fixed 30¢ is the same on every transaction, so it is a larger share of small amounts. On a $5 charge the fee is $0.445, an effective 8.9%, compared with 3.2% on $100.

Can I get lower Stripe fees?+

Businesses with large volumes can contact Stripe for custom pricing, and ACH direct debit is typically cheaper than cards for large invoices. Enter your negotiated rate in the percentage and fixed fee fields.
