About the Shopify Fee Calculator

This Shopify fee calculator adds up everything Shopify takes from an order: the Shopify Payments card processing fee (or, if you use another payment provider, that provider’s fee plus Shopify’s extra transaction fee) and your share of the monthly plan price. Enter what the customer pays, what the product and shipping cost you, and how many orders you get a month to see your true profit per order and per month.

It is built for new store owners choosing between Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, and for existing merchants checking whether upgrading a plan pays for itself through lower card rates. The plan comparison table shows total monthly fees on every plan at your order volume, so you can see the break-even point at a glance.

Rates use Shopify’s published US pricing as reviewed in October 2026: Basic $39/month ($29 billed yearly) with online cards at 2.9% + 30¢, Grow $105 ($79) at 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced $399 ($299) at 2.5% + 30¢, and Plus from $2,300 at 2.25% + 30¢. Premium cards cost more, international cards add 1%, and in-person payments are 2.6%–2.3% + 10¢. Sales tax, apps, themes and chargebacks are not included.

With the default inputs, the net profit per order is $33.67. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method

Processing = T × r + f · Transaction fee = T × t (third-party only) · Profit = T − Processing − Transaction − Plan ÷ orders − COGS − shipping cost

The order total T is the product subtotal plus the shipping you charge. Shopify Payments charges a percentage r of that total plus a fixed fee f per transaction: 30¢ online and 10¢ in person, with the percentage depending on your plan and on whether the card is standard, premium or international (standard rate + 1%).

If you take payments through a third-party provider instead, that provider charges its own fee and Shopify adds a transaction fee t of 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow), 0.6% (Advanced) or 0.2% (Plus) of the order. The plan price is spread across your monthly orders. Profit subtracts all fees plus your product and shipping costs; sales tax collected is excluded because it passes through to the government.

T

Worked examples

$60 order on Basic (yearly), standard card

The customer pays $65 ($60 + $5 shipping). Shopify Payments takes 2.9% + 30¢ = $2.19, and the $29 yearly-billed plan spread over 200 orders adds about 15¢, for $2.33 in fees. After $22 product cost and $7 shipping, profit is $33.67 per order, or $6,734 a month.

Advanced plan with 1,500 orders a month

On Advanced the online rate is 2.5% + 30¢, so the $65 order costs $1.93 to process. The $299 plan over 1,500 orders adds about 20¢. Total fees are $3,186.50 a month versus $3,306.50 on Basic, so at this volume the upgrade more than pays for itself.

Third-party gateway on Grow, billed monthly

An outside gateway at 2.9% + 30¢ costs $2.19 on the $65 order, and Shopify adds its 1% Grow transaction fee ($0.65). The $105 monthly plan over 200 orders is 52.5¢ each, so total fees are $3.36 and profit is $32.64.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify take per sale?+

With Shopify Payments on the Basic plan, an online standard-card sale costs 2.9% + 30¢ (US rates reviewed October 2026). Grow is 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced 2.5% + 30¢ and Plus 2.25% + 30¢, plus your monthly plan fee. There is no extra transaction fee when you use Shopify Payments.

What is the Shopify transaction fee?+

Shopify charges an extra transaction fee only when you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of whatever that provider charges.

When is it worth upgrading from Basic to Grow?+

Grow costs $50 more per month on yearly billing ($79 vs $29) and saves 0.2 percentage points on online cards. On a $65 average order that saves 13¢ per order, so you need roughly 385 such orders a month before card savings cover the higher plan price — use the plan table to check your own volume.

Does Shopify charge fees on shipping and taxes?+

Card processing fees apply to the full amount charged to the card, which includes shipping and any sales tax collected. This calculator includes shipping in the fee base; if you collect sales tax, the real fee will be slightly higher.

What are premium card rates on Shopify?+

Shopify lists higher online rates for premium cards (such as rewards and corporate cards): 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic down to 2.95% + 30¢ on Plus. International cards cost the standard rate plus 1%.
