About the Random Country Generator

This random country generator picks countries at random from the 193 member states of the United Nations, plus the two UN observer states (the Holy See/Vatican City and Palestine) if you include them. Each result shows the country’s flag emoji, its capital city and its region, and you can limit the draw to Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe or Oceania.

Use it for geography quizzes and flashcards (switch off capitals to quiz yourself), to choose a cuisine for tonight’s dinner, pick a travel destination to daydream about, assign countries for a classroom project or Model UN, or choose a theme for a party or a pub quiz round. Draws are without repeats, so asking for ten countries always gives ten different ones.

Regions follow the UN statistical M49 standard, which places countries such as Türkiye, Cyprus, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan in Asia and Russia in Europe. Where a country has more than one capital (South Africa, Bolivia, Malaysia and others) or its capital is disputed, the entry says so. Flags are shown with standard emoji, which some systems — notably Windows — display as two letters instead of a picture.

How to use the random country generator

  1. 1Choose the whole world or a single region.
  2. 2Set how many countries you want.
  3. 3Decide whether to include the observer states Vatican City and Palestine.
  4. 4Turn off capitals if you want to quiz yourself.
  5. 5Change any input or the seed to draw again.

Formula and method

P(a given country is picked) = k ÷ N

The tool builds the pool of N countries matching your region and observer-state settings, then draws k of them without replacement: each pick chooses uniformly among the countries not yet drawn. That makes every country equally likely, and every possible set of k countries equally likely, so each country appears in your list with probability k ÷ N.

Membership follows the United Nations list of 193 member states; the Holy See and the State of Palestine are the two non-member observer states. Regions are the five UN M49 regions: Africa (54 members), the Americas (35), Asia (47), Europe (43) and Oceania (14). Flags are built from the ISO 3166-1 two-letter code as Unicode regional-indicator pairs.

Worked examples

One random country from the whole world

The pool holds the 193 UN members plus 2 observer states, 195 in all. A single pick gives each country a 1 ÷ 195 ≈ 0.51% chance.

Five European countries for a project (members only)

Europe has 43 UN member states under the M49 grouping. Drawing 5 without repeats gives each one a 5 ÷ 43 ≈ 11.6% chance of being assigned.

Seeded African capitals quiz

Africa has 54 UN members and no observer states. With the seed “quiz night” the first of the ten countries is always Chad, capital N’Djamena, so a quiz host can share the seed and everyone gets the same list. Each country has a 10 ÷ 54 ≈ 18.5% chance of appearing.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are there in the world?+

The United Nations has 193 member states, and two observer states — the Holy See (Vatican City) and Palestine — bring the total to 195. Other territories such as Taiwan and Kosovo are recognised by some countries but are not UN members, so they are not in this list.

How many countries are in each continent?+

Using the UN M49 regions, Africa has 54 member states, the Americas 35, Asia 47, Europe 43 and Oceania 14. Counts by other definitions differ, mainly over transcontinental countries such as Russia, Türkiye and Kazakhstan.

Why is Türkiye listed in Asia?+

The UN M49 standard used here assigns Türkiye, Cyprus, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan to Western Asia, and Russia to Eastern Europe, even though each straddles or sits near the boundary between the two continents.

Why do some countries show more than one capital?+

A few countries split capital functions. South Africa has executive, legislative and judicial capitals; Bolivia’s constitutional capital is Sucre while the government sits in La Paz; and Malaysia’s official capital is Kuala Lumpur with the administration in Putrajaya.

Why do flags show as letters on my computer?+

Flag emoji are pairs of Unicode regional-indicator letters. Most phones and Macs draw them as flags, but Windows does not include flag emoji in its default font, so you see two letters such as “JP” instead.

Can I use this for a geography quiz?+

Yes. Pick a region and a number of countries, switch off “Show capitals” and ask players to name each capital, then switch capitals back on to check. A shared seed gives every player the same list.
