About the Random Question Generator
This random question generator draws conversation starters from a hand-written bank of 160 questions in six themes: icebreakers, would-you-rather dilemmas, deep conversation, funny questions, questions for kids and team or work questions. Pick a theme or mix them all, choose how many you want and get a fresh list with no duplicates.
Use it to open a team meeting or workshop, warm up a classroom, fill a long car journey, liven up a dinner party or date night, or prompt a journal entry. Every question is open-ended and safe for work, so you can use the lists in professional settings and with families.
Questions are drawn without replacement, so a batch never repeats a question. Type a seed to get exactly the same list again (useful for sharing a set with a group in advance); leave it blank for a new random selection each time.
How to use the random question generator
- 1Choose a question type, or "Mix of everything".
- 2Set how many questions you want.
- 3Generate the list and start asking.
- 4Generate again for a new set, or add a seed to share the same list.
Formula and method
The generator shuffles the chosen question bank with a Fisher–Yates shuffle and returns the first n questions, so every question is equally likely and none repeats within a batch. "Mix of everything" combines all six banks into one pool of 160.
The repeat figure answers a practical question: if you generate another batch of the same size, how likely is it to contain at least one question you have already seen? Of all C(P, n) possible batches, C(P − n, n) avoid every question in the current batch, so the chance of overlap is one minus their ratio.
- P
- Questions in the chosen theme
- n
- Questions drawn per batch
Worked examples
Five icebreakers for a meeting
The icebreaker bank has 30 questions. A second batch of five avoids all five current questions in C(25,5) ÷ C(30,5) = 53,130 ÷ 142,506 ≈ 37.3% of cases, so a repeat is likely about 63% of the time.
Ten from the full mix
All six banks together hold 160 questions. A fresh batch of ten overlaps the current ten with probability 1 − C(150,10) ÷ C(160,10) ≈ 48.6%.
Asking for more than the theme holds
The deep-conversation bank has 25 questions, so a request for 40 returns all 25 in random order. Any further batch must repeat them, so the repeat chance is 100%.
Frequently asked questions
What are good icebreaker questions?+
Good icebreakers are open-ended, easy to answer and low pressure — for example "What is a small thing that makes your day better?" or "What did you want to be when you were ten?". Avoid questions about money, politics or health in a new group.
How do you play Would You Rather?+
One person reads a dilemma with two options and everyone picks one and explains why. There are no right answers; the fun is in the reasoning. Pick the "Would you rather" theme to draw dilemmas at random.
Are these questions safe for work and kids?+
Yes. Every question in the bank is clean and non-personal enough for workplaces and families. The "For kids" theme is written for primary-school ages and the "Team and work" theme suits meetings.
How many questions are there?+
There are 160 in total: 30 icebreakers, 30 would-you-rather dilemmas, and 25 each for deep conversation, funny, kids and team questions.
Can I get the same questions again?+
Type any word or phrase in the seed box. The same seed, theme and count always produce the same list, so you can share it with others or reuse it next time.
