About the Charades & Pictionary Word Generator
This charades generator deals random words and phrases for charades, Pictionary, Heads Up-style guessing games and drawing challenges. Choose a category — actions, animals, objects, jobs or sports and hobbies — or mix them, pick easy, medium or hard, and generate a list for the whole game with no repeats.
Easy words such as "Dog" or "Brushing teeth" suit young children and warm-up rounds. Medium words like "Changing a tyre" or "Flamingo" are right for most family games, and hard prompts such as "Air traffic controller" or "Assembling flat-pack furniture" keep experienced players guessing. Every prompt is family-friendly and free of brand names and film titles, so nobody is stuck on something they have never heard of.
Enter your time limit per turn to see how long the game will run. Print the list and cut it into slips, or read prompts straight from your phone to each player. Add a seed to recreate the same list later.

Formula and method
The word bank holds 8 prompts for every combination of 5 categories and 3 difficulty levels, 120 prompts in all. Your category and difficulty choices select a pool (8 words for one category at one level, up to 120 for everything), which is shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle; the first n prompts are returned with no repeats. In mixed lists each prompt is tagged with its category as a hint.
Game time is an upper bound that assumes every turn runs the full timer; any word guessed early makes the real game shorter. The chart shows how the words you drew split across categories and difficulty levels.

Worked examples
Ten medium words for a family game
Medium difficulty across all five categories gives 5 × 8 = 40 prompts. Ten turns at 60 seconds each last at most 600 seconds, or 10 minutes.
Easy animals for young children
There are 8 easy animals, so a request for 12 returns all 8 in random order. Eight turns of 45 seconds is 360 seconds, or 6 minutes.
A long party game with every word
Any difficulty in every category gives the full bank of 120 prompts. Forty turns at 90 seconds are 3,600 seconds — one hour at most.
Frequently asked questions
What are good charades ideas for kids?+
Simple animals and actions work best: dog, monkey, snake, brushing teeth, swimming or eating spaghetti. Choose the Easy level here and the Animals or Actions category for young children.
What are the rules of charades?+
One player acts out a word or phrase without speaking, pointing at letters or mouthing words, while their team guesses before the timer runs out. Common signals are holding up fingers for the number of words and tugging an ear for "sounds like".
How is Pictionary different from charades?+
In Pictionary the player draws the word instead of acting it, again without letters, numbers or speaking. The same word list works for both; concrete objects and animals are easiest to draw.
How long should each charades turn be?+
One minute is the classic limit and suits medium words. Use 90–120 seconds for hard phrases or younger children, and 30 seconds for a fast-paced speed round.
Are there film or book titles?+
No. The bank avoids titles and brand names so that every player, of any age or background, knows the prompts. Write your own titles on slips if your group enjoys them.
