About the Sweden Salary Calculator
This Sweden salary calculator estimates your take-home pay (lön efter skatt) from a gross monthly salary using the 2026 rules from Skatteverket. It applies the basic allowance (grundavdrag), municipal income tax at your kommun’s rate, 20% state income tax above the 2026 threshold, the earned income tax credit (jobbskatteavdrag), the small earned-income reduction, the burial fee, the public service fee and, if you are a member, the Church of Sweden fee.
It is useful when comparing job offers between Swedish cities, checking how much of a raise you keep, or planning a move to Sweden. Municipal tax is the biggest item and varies by kommun — from about 29% to over 35% including the regional share — so enter your own kommun’s total rate for a precise answer; the default is the 2026 national average of 32.38%.
Assumptions: income year 2026, resident taxpayer under 66 at the start of the year, salary is the only income, and the same salary every month. The 7% general pension contribution is not shown because it is fully offset by an equal tax reduction. Results are annual figures divided by 12, so a payslip using Skatteverket’s monthly tax tables can differ by a few hundred kronor.
With the default inputs, the take-home pay per month is SEK 31,797.14. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method
Annual salary (12 × monthly, rounded down to the nearest SEK 100) is reduced by the basic allowance, which depends on income and the 2026 price base amount of SEK 59,200: from SEK 25,100 at low incomes up to 45,600 in the middle and 17,400 at high incomes, rounded up to the next hundred. What remains is taxable earned income, taxed at your municipal rate, plus 20% state tax on the part above SEK 643,000 (a gross salary of about SEK 660,400).
The jobbskatteavdrag is calculated from earned income in four bands of the price base amount (0.91, 3.24 and 8.08 PBB) minus the basic allowance, multiplied by your municipal rate, and cannot exceed municipal tax. A further reduction of 0.75% of taxable income above SEK 40,000 (max SEK 1,500) applies. The burial fee (0.292%), optional church fee and public service fee (1% of taxable income, max SEK 1,184) are added on top.

Worked examples
SEK 40,000 a month at the average tax rate
Annual pay is SEK 480,000 and the basic allowance is 17,400, leaving 462,600 taxable. Municipal tax at 32.38% is 149,790; the jobbskatteavdrag (52,390) and the 1,500 earned-income reduction come off, and burial and public service fees add 2,535. Total tax is about SEK 98,434, leaving roughly 31,797 a month.
SEK 25,000 a month
At SEK 300,000 a year the basic allowance is larger — 34,000 — so taxable income is 266,000. Municipal tax of 86,131 less a 32,537 job credit and 1,500 reduction, plus fees, gives total tax of SEK 54,054 and take-home pay of about 20,495 a month.
SEK 70,000 a month, 30% kommun, church member
Taxable income of SEK 822,600 is 179,600 above the state threshold, adding 35,920 of state tax. Municipal tax at 30% is 246,780 and the job credit 48,540. With the 1% church fee, burial and public service fees, total tax is SEK 244,472 and monthly take-home pay about 49,627.
Frequently asked questions
How much tax do you pay on salary in Sweden?+
Most employees pay only municipal tax, averaging 32.38% in 2026, on income after the basic allowance, reduced by the jobbskatteavdrag. On a SEK 40,000 monthly salary the effective rate is about 20.5%.
When do you pay state income tax in Sweden?+
State income tax of 20% applies to taxable earned income above SEK 643,000 in 2026. Adding the basic allowance, that means gross income above about SEK 660,400 a year, or roughly SEK 55,000 a month, for people under 66.
What is jobbskatteavdrag?+
Jobbskatteavdrag is an earned income tax credit for people who work. It is calculated from your work income, the basic allowance and your municipal tax rate, and in 2026 is worth up to about SEK 52,000 a year at the average rate.
What is grundavdrag?+
Grundavdrag is a basic allowance everyone with earned income gets automatically. For 2026 it ranges from SEK 25,100 at low incomes up to SEK 45,600, then falls to SEK 17,400 for incomes above about SEK 466,500.
Why does my kommun change my net pay?+
Municipal tax is set by each kommun and region and is the largest tax most people pay. A difference of 2 percentage points on a SEK 40,000 salary changes take-home pay by roughly SEK 500 a month, partly cushioned because the jobbskatteavdrag also scales with the municipal rate.
Do I have to pay church fee in Sweden?+
Only members of the Church of Sweden or another registered faith community pay the church fee, usually around 1% of taxable income. Everyone pays the burial fee (0.292% in most kommuner in 2026), whether or not they are members.
