About the Norway Salary Calculator

This Norway salary calculator turns a gross annual salary into take-home pay using the 2026 rates published by Skatteetaten (the Norwegian Tax Administration). It works out the three taxes every employee pays: 22% tax on ordinary income (alminnelig inntekt) after the minimum standard deduction and personal allowance, national insurance contributions (trygdeavgift) of 7.6% on wage income, and the five-step bracket tax (trinnskatt) on gross personal income.

Use it to compare a Norwegian job offer, check what a pay rise is worth after tax, or estimate the tax deducted from your monthly payslip. You can add other deductions such as union fees or interest on loans, which reduce ordinary income but not bracket tax or national insurance.

Assumptions: income year 2026, tax class 1, resident taxpayer aged 17–69 (the 5.1% national insurance rate for younger and older workers is selectable), living outside the Troms and Finnmark action zone, which has a lower 18.5% ordinary rate and other special rules. Wealth tax, holiday pay timing and the reduced “half tax” month in December are not modelled, so monthly figures are an annual average.

With the default inputs, the net pay per month (average) is NOK 40,751.45. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the norway salary calculator

  1. 1Enter your gross annual salary in NOK, including holiday pay if you want an annual figure.
  2. 2Add any other deductions such as loan interest or union fees.
  3. 3Choose your age group for the national insurance rate.
  4. 4Read your average net monthly pay and the split between the three taxes.
  5. 5Use the marginal rate to see what a raise or bonus is worth after tax.

Formula and method

Minstefradrag = min(46% × Gross, 95,700)
Ordinary tax = 22% × max(0, Gross − Minstefradrag − Other − 114,540)
Trygdeavgift = min(7.6% × Gross, 25% × (Gross − 99,650))
Trinnskatt = Σ step rate × income in step
Net = Gross − Ordinary tax − Trygdeavgift − Trinnskatt

Norway taxes salary in two layers. Ordinary income (alminnelig inntekt) is gross salary minus the minimum standard deduction (46% of wages, capped at NOK 95,700 in 2026) and any other deductions; after the NOK 114,540 personal allowance, it is taxed at a flat 22% (municipal, county and state shares combined).

Personal income — gross salary with no deductions — is the base for national insurance (7.6% for ages 17–69, never more than 25% of income above NOK 99,650) and for the bracket tax. Trinnskatt has five steps in 2026: 1.7% from NOK 226,101, 4.0% from 318,301, 13.7% from 725,051, 16.8% from 980,101 and 17.8% above 1,467,200. The marginal rate shown adds the three layers for the next krone earned.

Worked examples

NOK 650,000 salary

The minimum standard deduction hits its NOK 95,700 cap, so ordinary income is 554,300 and 22% of (554,300 − 114,540) is NOK 96,747.20. National insurance is 7.6% of 650,000 = 49,400, and bracket tax is 1.7% of 92,200 plus 4% of 331,700 = 14,835.40. Net pay is NOK 489,017 a year, about 40,751 a month.

NOK 450,000 salary

Ordinary income is 450,000 − 95,700 = 354,300, giving 22% × 239,760 = NOK 52,747.20. National insurance is 34,200 and bracket tax 6,835.40 (1.7% of 92,200 plus 4% of 131,700), leaving NOK 356,217 net — about 29,685 a month.

NOK 1.2 million with NOK 30,000 of loan interest

Interest reduces ordinary income to 1,074,300, so ordinary tax is 22% × 959,760 = 211,147.20. Bracket tax reaches step 4: 1,567.40 + 16,270 + 34,941.85 + 36,943.20 = 89,722.45. Total tax is NOK 392,070, leaving 807,930 net.

Low income: national insurance cap applies

At NOK 110,000 ordinary income after the 46% deduction is 59,400, below the personal allowance, so no ordinary tax is due. National insurance is capped at 25% of the 10,350 above NOK 99,650 = 2,587.50 instead of 7.6% (8,360).

Frequently asked questions

What is trinnskatt?+

Trinnskatt (bracket tax) is a progressive tax on gross personal income. In 2026 there is no bracket tax on the first NOK 226,100; the rate then rises in five steps from 1.7% to 17.8% on income above NOK 1,467,200.

How much tax do you pay on a salary in Norway?+

A typical employee pays 22% on ordinary income after deductions, 7.6% national insurance and bracket tax. On NOK 650,000 that adds up to about NOK 161,000, an effective rate of roughly 25%.

What is the personal allowance in Norway for 2026?+

The personal allowance (personfradrag) in tax class 1 is NOK 114,540 for 2026. It is deducted from ordinary income before the 22% tax, so it is worth up to about NOK 25,200 in tax.

What is the minimum standard deduction?+

Wage earners automatically get a minimum standard deduction (minstefradrag) of 46% of their wage income, capped at NOK 95,700 in 2026. It replaces actual work expenses and reduces ordinary income only.

Why is my December paycheck higher in Norway?+

Most employers deduct no tax or only half tax in June and December because the tax tables spread a year’s tax over 10.5 months. The total for the year is the same, which is why this calculator shows an average month.

Is tax lower in Northern Norway?+

Yes. Residents of the Troms and Finnmark action zone pay 18.5% instead of 22% on ordinary income, get a special Finnmark deduction and a lower step-3 bracket tax rate. This calculator uses the standard mainland rates.
