About the Hijri Date Converter
This Hijri date converter translates dates between the Gregorian calendar and the Islamic (Hijri) lunar calendar in both directions. Enter a Gregorian date to see the Hijri day, month and year, or enter a Hijri date — for example 1 Ramadan 1448 — to find the matching Gregorian date and weekday.
By default it uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, which is based on astronomical calculations and is widely used for civil dates across the Gulf. You can also switch to the tabular (arithmetical, “Kuwaiti”) Islamic calendar, which uses a fixed 30-year cycle of 11 leap years and is common in software. The two can differ by a day or two.
Religious dates such as the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are often set by local moon sighting, so the date announced by your community may be a day earlier or later than any calculated calendar. Use the result for planning and confirm key dates locally.

Formula and method
The Hijri calendar has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days, so a year is 354 or 355 days — about 11 days shorter than a solar year. The tabular method alternates 30- and 29-day months and adds a leap day to Dhu al-Hijjah in 11 years of every 30-year cycle (years 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26 and 29). Converting a date to a Julian Day Number (JDN) with the formula above, then back, links it to the Gregorian calendar; the epoch is 16 July 622 CE (Julian).
The Umm al-Qura calendar instead starts each month according to astronomical criteria for the new moon as seen from Mecca, published in official tables. The converter uses the published Umm al-Qura month-start table for 1343–1500 AH (August 1924 to November 2077) and falls back to the tabular calendar outside that range.
