About the Age Grading Calculator
Age grading puts every runner on the same scale regardless of age or sex. It compares your race time with the best time expected for someone of your age and sex, and expresses it as a percentage: 100% is world-record level, while 60–70% is a good local club standard. This age grading calculator also gives your age-graded time — the equivalent performance for a runner at peak age.
It is ideal for masters runners tracking progress as they get older, parkrun and club members comparing results across age groups, and anyone curious how a result would look if age were taken out of the equation. Pick the distance, enter your time, age and sex.
The calculation uses the 2025 WMA/USATF road age-grading tables maintained by Alan Jones and approved by the USA Track & Field Masters Long Distance Running Council on 10 January 2025: open-class standards of 12:49 / 26:24 / 57:31 / 2:00:35 for men and 13:54 / 28:46 / 1:02:52 / 2:09:56 for women (5K, 10K, half, marathon), with the published factor for each whole year of age from 5 to 100. Results are for certified road courses; track, trail and parkrun-style courses may use different tables, and parkrun still publishes its own grades, so small differences from other sites are possible. You can override the factor if a race uses a different table.
With the default inputs, the age-graded performance is 63.35%. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the age grading calculator
- 1Choose the race distance and your sex.
- 2Enter your age on race day and your finish time.
- 3Optionally enter a different age factor if your race uses another table.
- 4Read your age-graded percentage, level and open-age equivalent time.
- 5Use the table to set time targets for the next performance level.
Formula and method
The open standard is roughly the best time achievable at peak age for that distance and sex. The age factor (1.0 at peak age, lower as you get older or younger) converts it into an age standard — the 100% time for your age. Your percentage is the age standard divided by your actual time, and multiplying your time by the factor gives the equivalent peak-age time.
Age factors and open standards come from the 2025 WMA/USATF road tables (one factor per whole year of age, 5–100). Open standards used: men 12:49 / 26:24 / 57:31 / 2:00:35 and women 13:54 / 28:46 / 1:02:52 / 2:09:56 for 5K, 10K, half and marathon. Your age is rounded down to a whole year, as the tables are.

Worked examples
45-year-old man, 10K in 45:00
The 2025 road factor for a 45-year-old man over 10K is 0.9261, so the 100% time for his age is 1,584 ÷ 0.9261 = 1,710.4 s (28:30). His 2,700 s run grades at 1,710.4 ÷ 2,700 = 63.3% — local class — and equals 2,700 × 0.9261 = 2,500 s (about 41:40) at peak age.
62-year-old woman, 5K in 28:30
Her 5K factor at 62 is 0.7427, making her age standard 834 ÷ 0.7427 = 1,122.9 s (18:43). A 1,710 s finish is a 65.7% age grade (local class), equivalent to about 21:10 at peak age.
38-year-old woman, half marathon in 1:45:00
The half-marathon factor for a 38-year-old woman is 0.9714, so her age standard is 3,772 ÷ 0.9714 = 3,883 s (1:04:43). Her 6,300 s finish grades at 61.6% and is equivalent to about 1:42:00 at peak age.
Marathon 3:30:00 with a custom factor of 0.8812
Using the supplied factor instead of the table value, the age standard is 7,235 ÷ 0.8812 = 8,210 s (2:16:50). A 12,600 s marathon grades at 65.2% and is equivalent to a 3:05:03 open-age time.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good age-grading percentage?+
By the standard WMA scale: 60% or more is local class, 70%+ regional class, 80%+ national class and 90%+ world class. Many regular club runners score between 50% and 65%.
How is age grading calculated?+
Your time is compared with the best time expected for your exact age and sex. That age standard divided by your time gives the percentage. The age factors come from the WMA/USATF road tables, which are built from age-group world and national records.
Why is my parkrun age grade different from this calculator?+
This tool uses the 2025 WMA/USATF road tables. Parkrun applies its own age-grading tables and standards, and some sites still use the 2020 or older tables, so grades can differ by a point or two. Enter your parkrun or race factor in the override box to match their figure.
Can I compare men and women with age grading?+
Yes. Because each percentage is measured against a sex-specific standard, a 70% woman and a 70% man have run equally strong performances relative to their groups, which is how many races award overall age-graded prizes.
Does age grading work for young runners?+
WMA tables include factors for juniors, since runners under about 20 are not yet at peak performance. This tool uses the published 2025 road factors down to age 5, but youth results are based on sparse record data and should be read as a guide.
