About the Steps to Miles Converter
This steps to miles converter turns the step count from your phone, pedometer or fitness watch into distance. Enter your steps and either your height or your measured stride length, and it returns miles, kilometres and how many of your steps make up a mile or a kilometre.
Step length varies from person to person, so there is no single answer to “how many steps in a mile”. For a typical adult it is roughly 2,000–2,500 walking steps. When you only know your height, the converter uses the widely used rule of thumb that walking stride is about 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women.
For the most accurate result, measure your own stride: walk a known distance such as 20 steps on a track or measured path, divide the distance by the number of steps, and enter the result as a custom stride. Running strides are much longer than walking strides, so use a measured running stride when converting steps from runs.
With the default inputs, the distance is 4.52 miles. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the steps to miles converter
- 1Enter your step count from your phone or tracker.
- 2Choose whether to estimate stride from height or use a measured stride.
- 3Enter your height and sex, or your stride length in inches or cm.
- 4Read the distance in miles and kilometres.
- 5Check “steps per mile” to know how many steps make a mile for you.
Formula and method
Distance is simply the number of steps multiplied by the length of each step. A mile is 63,360 inches (5,280 ft × 12), and a kilometre is 100,000 centimetres, so the converter multiplies your step count by stride length and divides by those constants.
If you choose the height method, stride is estimated as 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women — a common walking-stride rule of thumb used by pedometer makers. Actual stride depends on leg length, speed, terrain and footwear, and a running stride can be 50% longer or more, so a measured stride is always more accurate.

Worked examples
10,000 steps, 5 ft 9 in man
Estimated stride is 69 × 0.415 = 28.6 inches. 10,000 steps × 28.635 in = 286,350 in, which divided by 63,360 is 4.52 miles (7.27 km). A mile takes about 2,213 steps.
8,000 steps, 165 cm woman
Stride is 165 × 0.413 = 68.1 cm. 8,000 × 68.145 cm = 545,160 cm, or 5.45 km — about 3.39 miles.
15,000 steps with a measured 30-inch stride
15,000 × 30 in = 450,000 in. Dividing by 63,360 gives 7.10 miles (11.43 km). With a 30-inch stride you take exactly 2,112 steps per mile.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?+
For most adults walking, a mile is about 2,000–2,500 steps. Taller people with longer strides need fewer steps; at a 28-inch stride a mile is about 2,263 steps, and at 32 inches it is 1,980.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?+
For an average adult, 10,000 steps is roughly 4 to 5 miles (6.5–8 km). A 5 ft 9 in man covers about 4.5 miles; a 5 ft 4 in woman about 4.2 miles.
How do I measure my stride length?+
Walk a measured distance, such as 20 metres or 50 feet, at your normal pace and count the steps. Divide the distance by the number of steps. Repeat a few times and average the results.
Is stride length the same as step length?+
In fitness trackers “stride” usually means one step, heel to heel. In gait science a stride is two steps (left plus right). This converter uses the single-step meaning that pedometers use.
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?+
Roughly 300–500 calories for most adults, depending on body weight and walking speed. Use the calories burned calculator with your walking time for a personal estimate.
