  • 42.4 ml/kg/min rates as “Good” for a male aged 30.
  • Raise it by about 2.6 ml/kg/min to reach “Excellent”. Consistent aerobic training often improves VO2 max by 5–15% over a few months.

About the VO2 Max Calculator

This VO2 max calculator estimates your maximal oxygen uptake — the most oxygen your body can use per kilogram per minute during all-out exercise. VO2 max is one of the best single measures of cardiorespiratory fitness and is strongly linked with endurance performance and long-term health.

A lab test on a treadmill with a gas-analysis mask is the gold standard, but you can get a useful estimate from a simple field test. Choose one of four validated methods: the Cooper 12-minute run, the 1.5-mile run test used by many militaries and police forces, the Rockport one-mile walk test for beginners or older adults, or the Uth heart-rate ratio method that needs only your resting and maximum heart rate.

The calculator then rates your score against age- and sex-specific norms published by the Cooper Institute, from very poor to superior, so you can set goals and track progress between tests. Field estimates usually fall within about 10% of lab values; the run tests are most accurate for people who can pace an all-out effort well.

With the default inputs, the estimated vo2 max is 42.4 ml/kg/min. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the vo2 max calculator

  1. 1Choose the test you completed: Cooper run, 1.5-mile run, Rockport walk or heart rate ratio.
  2. 2Enter your age and sex so your result can be rated.
  3. 3Enter the test result — distance, time, or heart rate values.
  4. 4Read your estimated VO2 max and fitness rating.
  5. 5Repeat the same test every 6–12 weeks to track progress.

Formula and method

Cooper: VO2 = (d − 504.9) ÷ 44.73
1.5-mile run: VO2 = 3.5 + 483 ÷ t
Rockport: VO2 = 132.853 − 0.0769W − 0.3877A + 6.315S − 3.2649T − 0.1565HR
Uth: VO2 = 15.3 × HRmax ÷ HRrest

Each field test uses a regression equation fitted against laboratory VO2 max measurements. The Cooper test (1968) converts the distance you run in 12 minutes, in metres, into VO2 max. The 1.5-mile test uses your finishing time in minutes. The Rockport walk test (Kline et al., 1987) combines body weight in pounds, age, sex (1 for male, 0 for female), walk time in minutes and heart rate at the finish. The Uth method (2004) uses the ratio of maximum to resting heart rate.

Ratings compare your estimate with Cooper Institute norms for your age group and sex. VO2 max is expressed relative to body weight, so losing fat without losing fitness also raises the number. Dividing by 3.5 converts it to METs, the unit used in exercise prescriptions.

d
Distance run in 12 minutes (metres)
t / T
Run or walk time in minutes
W
Body weight in pounds
A
Age in years
S
Sex: 1 = male, 0 = female
HR
Heart rate (bpm) at the end of the walk

Worked examples

Cooper test: 2,400 m in 12 minutes, man aged 30

(2,400 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 = 42.4 ml/kg/min. For men aged 30–39 the “Good” band starts at 41.0 and “Excellent” at 45.0, so this is Good and about 2.6 points short of Excellent.

1.5-mile run in 12:00, woman aged 25

3.5 + 483 ÷ 12 = 43.75 ml/kg/min, or 12.5 METs. For women aged 20–29 anything above 41.0 rates as Superior.

Rockport walk: 180 lb man aged 45, 15:00 mile, finish HR 130

132.853 − 0.0769 × 180 − 0.3877 × 45 + 6.315 − 3.2649 × 15 − 0.1565 × 130 = 38.6 ml/kg/min. For men aged 40–49 that is Fair; Good starts at 39.0.

Heart rate ratio: man aged 30, resting HR 55

Estimated max heart rate is 208 − 0.7 × 30 = 187. The Uth formula gives 15.3 × 187 ÷ 55 = 52.0 ml/kg/min, a Superior rating for men in their 30s.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good VO2 max?+

It depends on age and sex. For men in their 30s, above about 41 ml/kg/min is good and above 49.5 superior; for women in their 30s, above 31.5 is good and above 40 superior. Elite endurance athletes often exceed 70.

How accurate are VO2 max field tests?+

Well-performed field tests usually estimate VO2 max within about 10% of a laboratory test. Pacing, motivation, weather and terrain affect run tests; the heart-rate ratio method is the least precise because max heart rate is estimated.

How do I do the Cooper test?+

After a good warm-up, run as far as you can in exactly 12 minutes, ideally on a 400 m track so the distance is easy to measure. Enter the total distance in metres or miles.

How can I improve my VO2 max?+

Combine plenty of easy aerobic training with one or two weekly sessions of intervals at 90–95% of max heart rate, such as 4 × 4 minutes hard with 3 minutes easy. Losing excess body fat also raises relative VO2 max.

Does VO2 max decline with age?+

Yes. VO2 max typically falls by roughly 10% per decade after age 30 in inactive people, and less in people who keep training. That is why fitness ratings are adjusted for age.

Is the Rockport walk test good for beginners?+

Yes. It only requires a brisk one-mile walk and a heart-rate reading at the end, which makes it safer for older adults, beginners and people returning from injury than an all-out run.
