About the PIP Points Calculator

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is decided by a points test. A health professional scores you against descriptors for 10 daily living activities and 2 mobility activities, set out in Schedule 1 of the PIP Regulations 2013. This calculator lists every descriptor with its points so you can choose the one that best describes you for each activity, then adds up your scores and shows the award rate you would get.

You need 8 points for the standard rate and 12 points for the enhanced rate of each component. Daily living and mobility are scored and paid separately, so you can get one, both or neither. Only the highest-scoring descriptor in each activity counts, and a descriptor applies only if it is true on more than half of days and you can do the task safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and in a reasonable time.

Weekly amounts use the 2026/27 rates from April 2026 (daily living £76.70 or £114.60; mobility £30.30 or £80.00). PIP is not means-tested and is paid every four weeks. In Scotland PIP has been replaced by Adult Disability Payment, which uses very similar descriptors. This is a self-assessment guide, not a DWP decision.

With the default inputs, the estimated pip per week is £107.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the pip points calculator

  1. 1For each activity, choose the descriptor that applies to you on most days.
  2. 2Think about whether you can do it safely, repeatedly, to an acceptable standard and in a reasonable time.
  3. 3Check your daily living and mobility totals against the 8 and 12 point thresholds.
  4. 4Read your likely award and weekly amount.
  5. 5Use the activity table to prepare evidence for each descriptor you rely on.

Formula and method

Component points = Σ highest-scoring descriptor per activity; 8–11 = standard rate, 12+ = enhanced rate

Each of the 10 daily living activities and 2 mobility activities has descriptors worth between 0 and 12 points. For each activity only the single highest-scoring descriptor that applies is counted, and the points for the activities in each component are added together. A total of 8 to 11 points gives the standard rate of that component and 12 or more gives the enhanced rate (regulations 5 and 6 of the PIP Regulations 2013).

A descriptor applies if it is satisfied on more than 50% of days over the required period, and you must be able to complete the activity safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and within a reasonable time (twice as long as someone without your condition). The weekly amount is the 2026/27 rate for each component you qualify for, added together.

Worked examples

Standard rate for both components

Help preparing food (4), managing medication (1), aids for the toilet and dressing (2 + 2) and prompting to engage with people (2) total 11 daily living points — standard rate. Walking only 20–50 metres unaided scores 8 mobility points. £76.70 + £30.30 = £107.00 a week, paid as £428 every four weeks.

Enhanced rate for both components

Being unable to cook (8), needing help getting in and out of the shower (3), with upper-body dressing (4) and with toilet needs (4), plus medication help (1) and prompting to engage (2), gives 22 daily living points — well above 12. Moving no more than 20 metres scores 12 for mobility. The two enhanced rates total £194.60 a week.

Points below the thresholds

Using aids to cook, for the toilet, plus prompting to engage scores 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 daily living points, and walking 50–200 metres scores 4 mobility points. Both are under the 8-point threshold, so no PIP would be awarded on these descriptors.

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you need for PIP?+

You need at least 8 points in a component for the standard rate and 12 points for the enhanced rate. Daily living and mobility are scored separately, so you might qualify for one component but not the other.

How much is PIP in 2026/27?+

From April 2026 the daily living component is £76.70 a week (standard) or £114.60 (enhanced), and the mobility component is £30.30 (standard) or £80.00 (enhanced). The maximum award is £194.60 a week.

Can points from different activities be added together?+

Yes. Points from all 10 daily living activities are added together, and points from the 2 mobility activities are added together. Within a single activity, though, only the highest-scoring descriptor counts.

What does "reliably" mean in a PIP assessment?+

You can only be treated as able to do an activity if you can do it safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and within a reasonable time. If you can’t, the higher-scoring descriptor should apply.

Is PIP means-tested?+

No. PIP does not depend on your income or savings and you can get it whether or not you work. It is also tax-free and does not count as income for Universal Credit or Pension Credit.

What does the enhanced mobility rate give you?+

The enhanced mobility component (12+ points) lets you use the Motability Scheme to lease a car, scooter or wheelchair, and it can qualify you for a Blue Badge and vehicle tax exemption.
