About the Free School Meals Eligibility Calculator

This free school meals eligibility calculator compares your household income with the USDA Income Eligibility Guidelines for the 2026–27 school year (July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027). Children qualify for free meals when household income is at or below 130% of the 2026 federal poverty guidelines, and for reduced-price meals at or below 185%. The calculator shows both limits at the pay frequency you choose — yearly, monthly, twice a month, every two weeks or weekly — and tells you which category you fall into.

It is designed for parents filling in a school meal application, school staff answering questions, and anyone checking Summer EBT, after-school snack or CACFP eligibility, which use the same guidelines. Some children qualify automatically regardless of income: households receiving SNAP, TANF or FDPIR, and children who are in foster care, homeless, migrant, runaway or enrolled in Head Start.

Income means gross household income before taxes and deductions. Many schools now serve free meals to every student through the Community Eligibility Provision or state universal meal laws, so check with your district — but it is still worth submitting an application where asked, because it can unlock other discounts and funding.

How to use the free school meals eligibility calculator

  1. 1Enter the number of people in your household, including all children.
  2. 2Choose your location — Alaska and Hawaii have higher limits.
  3. 3Enter gross household income and how often it is received.
  4. 4Pick an automatic-eligibility reason if one applies (SNAP, foster care, Head Start and so on).
  5. 5Read the result and submit your school’s meal application if you qualify.

Formula and method

Free limit = ⌈1.30 × FPL(n)⌉; Reduced limit = ⌈1.85 × FPL(n)⌉; per-period limit = ⌈annual ÷ 12, 24, 26 or 52⌉

USDA multiplies the 2026 HHS poverty guideline for each household size by 1.30 (free meals and milk) and 1.85 (reduced-price meals) and rounds up to the next whole dollar. Monthly, twice-monthly, every-two-weeks and weekly limits divide the annual figure by 12, 24, 26 and 52 and are also rounded up.

The calculator compares your gross income with the limits at the same frequency you entered, which is how schools read the chart on the application. If a household has income at several frequencies, schools convert everything to yearly by multiplying weekly by 52, every two weeks by 26, twice monthly by 24 and monthly by 12 — use the yearly option for that case.

Worked examples

Family of 4 earning $4,500 a month

For 4 people the 2026 poverty guideline is $33,000. The free limit is $42,900 a year ($3,575 a month) and the reduced-price limit is $61,050 ($5,088 a month). At $4,500 a month the children qualify for reduced-price meals with $588 to spare.

Parent and two children paid $1,300 every two weeks

For 3 people the free limit is ⌈$27,320 × 1.30⌉ = $35,516 a year, or $1,366 every two weeks after rounding up. Pay of $1,300 is $66 under it, so the children get free meals.

Household of 5 on SNAP with $70,000 income

SNAP households are categorically eligible, so the children get free meals regardless of the income chart. For reference the free limit for 5 is ⌈$38,680 × 1.30⌉ = $50,284 and the reduced-price limit is $71,558.

Frequently asked questions

What income qualifies for free school lunch in 2026–27?+

Household income at or below 130% of the 2026 poverty guidelines: $35,516 a year for a family of three, $42,900 for four and $50,284 for five in the 48 states. Reduced-price meals go up to 185%, or $61,050 for a family of four.

How much do reduced-price school meals cost?+

Federal rules cap the charge at 40 cents for lunch and 30 cents for breakfast. Many states and districts cover that co-pay, so reduced-price students often eat for free.

Who qualifies automatically for free school meals?+

Children in households receiving SNAP, TANF or FDPIR, and children who are in foster care, homeless, migrant, runaway or enrolled in Head Start. Schools often confirm this through direct certification without an application.

Do I use gross or net income on the school meal application?+

Gross income — earnings before taxes and deductions, plus child support, pensions, Social Security, unemployment and other cash income. Do not include SNAP, WIC or the value of school meals.

My school serves free meals to everyone. Should I still apply?+

Schools using the Community Eligibility Provision do not need individual applications for meals, but some states ask families to fill in an income form because it helps the school get education funding and can qualify you for fee waivers.

When do the new income guidelines start?+

The 2026–27 guidelines took effect on July 1, 2026 and run until June 30, 2027. You can apply any time during the school year if your income drops.
