About the PSI to Bar
This PSI to bar converter turns pounds per square inch into bar, the metric pressure unit printed on most European tyre placards, bike pumps, espresso machines and air compressors. It also shows the same pressure in kilopascals (kPa), standard atmospheres (atm) and kilogram-force per square centimetre (kgf/cm²), so you can match whatever your gauge displays.
It is ideal when a car door sticker gives 35 psi but the pump at the petrol station reads in bar, when setting a road-bike or scuba regulator from a spec in another unit, or when comparing compressor and pressure-washer ratings.
Tyre and compressor gauges show gauge pressure (above the surrounding air). Converting between psi and bar does not change that — 32 psi gauge is 2.21 bar gauge. The conversion factor is exact: 1 psi = 0.0689475729 bar.
With the default inputs, the bar is 2.2063 bar. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the psi to bar
- 1Enter the pressure in psi (for example from a tyre sticker).
- 2Read the value in bar, plus kPa, atm and kgf/cm².
- 3Use the chart below for common tyre and compressor pressures.
- 4Set your gauge or pump to the converted figure.
Formula and method
One psi is one pound-force spread over one square inch: 4.4482216 N ÷ 0.00064516 m² = 6894.757 pascals. One bar is defined as exactly 100,000 pascals, so 1 psi = 6894.757 ÷ 100,000 = 0.0689476 bar, and 1 bar ≈ 14.5038 psi.
The other outputs use the same pascal value: kPa = Pa ÷ 1000, atm = Pa ÷ 101,325 and kgf/cm² = Pa ÷ 98,066.5. Gauge readings stay gauge readings — no atmospheric offset is added.

Worked examples
32 psi car tyre
32 × 0.0689476 = 2.206 bar. That is 220.6 kPa, the kind of figure shown on a metric tyre gauge.
100 psi road-bike tyre or compressor
100 × 0.0689476 = 6.89 bar, or about 6.8 times sea-level atmospheric pressure.
Atmospheric pressure, 14.696 psi
Standard sea-level pressure is 14.696 psi. Multiplying by 0.0689476 gives 1.01325 bar — which is exactly 1 atm.
Frequently asked questions
How many bar is 1 psi?+
One psi equals 0.0689476 bar. Put the other way, 1 bar equals about 14.5038 psi, so bar values are roughly psi divided by 14.5.
What is 35 psi in bar?+
35 psi × 0.0689476 = 2.41 bar. Common tyre settings are 30 psi = 2.07 bar, 33 psi = 2.28 bar and 36 psi = 2.48 bar.
What is 2.2 bar in psi?+
2.2 bar × 14.5038 = 31.9 psi, so 2.2 bar is essentially the 32 psi that many cars specify for their tyres.
Is psi gauge or absolute?+
Tyre gauges and compressors read gauge pressure (psig), measured above the surrounding air. Absolute pressure (psia) adds about 14.7 psi at sea level; convert like for like.
Why do some cars list pressure in kPa instead of bar?+
kPa and bar are both metric: 1 bar = 100 kPa. Some manufacturers print kPa (e.g. 220 kPa) and others bar (2.2 bar) for the same pressure.
