PSI

31.908 psi

Kilopascals

220 kPa

Bar

2.2 bar

Atmospheres

Working

220 kPa = 220 kPa ÷ 6.894757 = 31.908 psi
  • This is within the typical 30–35 psi (about 205–240 kPa) range for passenger-car tyres — always follow your door-jamb placard.
  • Quick estimate: kPa ÷ 7 ≈ 31.4 psi (exact 31.91 psi).

About the kPa to PSI

This kPa to PSI converter changes pressure in kilopascals into pounds per square inch, and also gives the value in bar and standard atmospheres. Start from psi, bar or atm instead and it works in reverse, so you can go from a US tyre gauge reading to the kPa figure on a European or Australian door sticker in one step.

The most common use is tyre pressure: car placards outside the US often list kPa, while gauges and air pumps in the US show psi. It is also handy for bike and pressure-washer ratings, air-compressor settings, HVAC and plumbing specs, and physics homework that mixes SI and imperial units.

The conversion is exact to the digits shown: 1 psi is 6.894757 kPa, 1 bar is 100 kPa and 1 atm is 101.325 kPa. Tyre and gauge readings are gauge pressure (above atmospheric), so no offset is needed when converting between them.

With the default inputs, the psi is 31.908 psi. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the kpa to psi

  1. 1Enter the pressure value.
  2. 2Choose the unit it is in — kPa by default.
  3. 3Read the pressure in psi, plus kPa, bar and atm.
  4. 4Use the tyre-pressure table for quick lookups.

Formula and method

psi = kPa ÷ 6.894757 · kPa = psi × 6.894757 · bar = kPa ÷ 100

One pound-force per square inch equals 6,894.757 pascals, or 6.894757 kPa, so dividing kilopascals by 6.894757 gives psi (equivalently, multiply by 0.145038). The bar is defined as exactly 100 kPa and the standard atmosphere as exactly 101.325 kPa.

The tool converts whatever you enter into kilopascals first and then into every other unit. Gauge and absolute pressures convert the same way; just keep both values as gauge (like tyre pressures) or both as absolute.

Worked examples

Car tyre placard: 220 kPa

220 ÷ 6.894757 = 31.9 psi, so set a US gauge to about 32 psi. The same pressure is 2.2 bar.

32 psi in kPa

32 × 6.894757 = 220.6 kPa, or 2.21 bar — a common front-tyre pressure for family cars.

2.5 bar in psi

2.5 bar is 250 kPa. Dividing by 6.894757 gives 36.26 psi.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert kPa to psi?+

Divide kilopascals by 6.894757, or multiply by 0.145038. For example, 240 kPa × 0.145038 = 34.8 psi.

How many kPa is 35 psi?+

35 psi × 6.894757 = 241.3 kPa, or about 2.41 bar. That is a typical tyre pressure for a loaded car or light SUV.

What is 1 bar in psi?+

1 bar is exactly 100 kPa, which equals 14.5038 psi. One standard atmosphere (101.325 kPa) is 14.696 psi.

Is tyre pressure in kPa gauge or absolute?+

Tyre pressures are gauge pressure — the amount above the surrounding air pressure. A flat tyre reads 0 kPa on a gauge even though the air inside is at about 101 kPa absolute.

Is there a quick way to estimate psi from kPa?+

Divide kPa by 7 for a rough answer. It gives 31.4 psi for 220 kPa versus the exact 31.9 psi, so it runs about 1.5% low.
