About the Meta Tag Generator

This meta tag generator writes the HTML tags that go inside a page’s <head>: the title tag, meta description, robots directive, canonical link, charset and viewport, plus optional Open Graph and Twitter Card tags that control how the page looks when shared on social media and messaging apps. Fill in the fields and copy the finished code.

It is meant for site owners, bloggers, marketers and developers launching a new page or fixing SEO basics flagged by an audit. Length checks warn when a title is likely to be cut off in search results (roughly beyond 60 characters) or a description is too short or long (aim for about 70–160 characters), and special characters are escaped so the markup stays valid.

Meta tags do not guarantee rankings or exactly how a search result appears — Google may rewrite titles and snippets based on the query — but a clear, unique title and description for every page remains one of the simplest on-page improvements. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How to use the meta tag generator

  1. 1Write a unique page title that leads with the main topic or keyword.
  2. 2Write a meta description that summarises the page and gives a reason to click.
  3. 3Add the canonical URL and choose a robots setting.
  4. 4Turn on social tags and add a share image and site name if the page will be shared.
  5. 5Copy the code into the <head> of your page and check the length warnings.

Formula and method

The generator trims extra whitespace from each field, escapes the characters &, ", < and > so attribute values cannot break the HTML, and outputs one tag per line in the order browsers and crawlers expect: charset first, then viewport, title, description, optional keywords and author, robots and the canonical link. Optional fields are omitted entirely when left blank rather than producing empty tags.

With social tags enabled it adds Open Graph properties (og:type, og:title, og:description, og:url, og:image, og:site_name) and Twitter Card tags, choosing the large-image card when a share image is supplied. Length checks count characters: titles of 30–60 and descriptions of 70–160 characters are flagged as a good length, since longer text is often truncated in results (truncation is actually based on pixel width).

Worked examples

Product category page with social tags

The 37-character title and 146-character description both fall inside the recommended ranges. With charset, viewport, title, description, robots and canonical (6 tags) plus 6 Open Graph and 4 Twitter tags, the generator outputs 16 tags.

Private page kept out of search

Without social tags the output is charset, viewport, title, description, keywords, a noindex, nofollow robots tag and the canonical link — 7 tags in total.

Long title and thin description

A 71-character title is likely to be cut off in search results, and a 16-character description gives searchers little reason to click. With basics, social tags and the canonical turned off, only the title, description and robots tags remain.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta title be?+

Aim for roughly 50–60 characters. Google truncates titles by pixel width (around 600 px on desktop), so shorter titles with the main topic first are less likely to be cut off.

How long should a meta description be?+

Around 120–160 characters is a common target. Google may show longer or shorter snippets depending on the query and device, and it may rewrite the description using page text if it seems more relevant.

Does Google use the meta keywords tag?+

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for ranking for many years. It is harmless to include but offers no SEO benefit for Google search.

What is a canonical tag?+

The rel="canonical" link tells search engines which URL is the preferred version of a page when the same content is reachable at several addresses (for example with tracking parameters). It helps consolidate ranking signals onto one URL.

What are Open Graph tags?+

Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image and others) tell Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, iMessage and many other apps what title, text and image to show when your link is shared. Twitter/X reads its own twitter: tags and falls back to Open Graph.

Where do I put meta tags?+

Paste them inside the <head> element of the page’s HTML, before </head>. In WordPress, Shopify and most site builders, use the SEO settings or an SEO plugin rather than editing the theme directly.
