About the Max CPC Calculator

This max CPC calculator tells you the highest cost per click you can afford on Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Amazon or any pay-per-click channel. Enter your average order value, gross margin and conversion rate, and it calculates the break-even CPC — the price at which ad spend eats all the gross profit — and a target max CPC that leaves the profit margin you want.

It is built for advertisers setting manual or portfolio bid caps, choosing a target CPA or ROAS for smart bidding, or judging whether a keyword with a high estimated CPC can ever be profitable. The chart shows how sharply affordable CPC rises as conversion rate improves, which is often a better lever than cutting bids.

If customers come back and buy again, raise the orders-per-customer figure to bid on lifetime value rather than the first order. Treat the result as a ceiling for average CPC; in auction-based platforms your actual cost per click is usually below your maximum bid.

With the default inputs, the target max cpc is $1.08. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the max cpc calculator

  1. 1Enter your average order value and gross margin.
  2. 2Enter the conversion rate for the campaign or keyword.
  3. 3Set the profit margin you want to keep after ad costs.
  4. 4Raise orders per customer if you bid on lifetime value.
  5. 5Use the target max CPC as your bid cap, or the target CPA/ROAS for smart bidding.

Formula and method

Break-even CPC = AOV × Orders × Margin × CVR · Target max CPC = AOV × Orders × (Margin − Target profit) × CVR

Each conversion is worth the order value times your gross margin in profit before advertising — that is the break-even cost per acquisition. Multiplying by the conversion rate converts it to a per-click figure, because on average you pay for 1 ÷ CVR clicks to win one order. The target max CPC does the same after reserving your target profit margin.

Break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ margin and target ROAS is 1 ÷ (margin − target profit). Orders per customer multiplies the value of a conversion when you bid for lifetime value. The calculation assumes margin already includes variable costs such as shipping and payment processing, and that conversion rate is measured on the same clicks you are bidding for.

AOV
Average order value (revenue per order)
Margin
Gross margin as a decimal
CVR
Conversion rate: orders ÷ clicks
Target profit
Profit you want left as a share of revenue

Worked examples

Online store: $120 orders, 40% margin, 3% conversion

Each order earns $120 × 40% = $48 of gross profit, so at a 3% conversion rate a click is worth at most $1.44. Reserving 10% profit leaves $36 per order for ads — a $1.08 target max CPC, equivalent to a 3.33× target ROAS.

Lead-gen service with repeat customers

Three $250 orders per customer are worth $750 of revenue and $450 of gross profit. Keeping 20% profit leaves $300 per customer, so at a 5% conversion rate you can bid up to $15 per click.

Thin margins on a low-converting keyword

A $60 order at 25% margin leaves $15 of gross profit; after a 5% profit target, $12 can go to ads. At 1.5% conversion that is only $0.18 per click, and you need a 4× ROAS just to break even.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate max CPC?+

Max CPC = value of a conversion × profit margin available for ads × conversion rate. For a $100 order with 30% margin and a 2% conversion rate, break-even max CPC is $100 × 0.30 × 0.02 = $0.60.

What is break-even CPC?+

Break-even CPC is the cost per click at which advertising spend exactly equals the gross profit from the sales it generates. Paying more than that loses money on every order unless customers buy again later.

Should max CPC be based on lifetime value?+

If customers reliably return — subscriptions, consumables, services — bidding on lifetime value lets you win more auctions and grow faster. It requires the cash to fund acquisition up front and good data on repeat purchase rates, so many advertisers use a conservative multiple.

How does max CPC relate to target CPA and ROAS?+

They are the same budget expressed differently. Target CPA = max CPC ÷ conversion rate, and target ROAS = order value ÷ target CPA. Smart bidding strategies in Google Ads use target CPA or target ROAS rather than a per-click cap.

Will I pay my max CPC on every click?+

Usually not. In Google Ads and similar auctions the actual CPC is typically what you need to beat the next competitor’s ad rank, which is often below your maximum bid. Your average CPC is the figure to compare against these ceilings.
