About the Lawn Care Pricing Calculator

This lawn care pricing calculator answers the question every mowing business faces on every new property: how much should I charge for this lawn? It estimates the mowable area (the lot minus the house, driveway and beds), converts it to mowing time using your mower’s real production rate, adds trimming, edging and blowing, and includes drive time to the property. Labor, equipment running costs and overhead are then costed and your target profit per crew hour is added on top.

It is built for solo operators, small mowing crews and landscaping companies quoting weekly or biweekly service. Mowing rate matters more than anything else. A quick estimate is cutting width in feet × ground speed in mph × 5,280 × an efficiency factor of roughly 0.6–0.8 for overlap, turns and obstacles — so a 21-inch mower walked at 3 mph covers roughly 16,000–22,000 sq ft an hour on open turf, and a 60-inch zero-turn many times that. Time a few of your own lawns and use the rate you actually achieve.

A minimum charge per visit keeps tiny lawns profitable once loading, unloading and driving are counted. The results show price per visit, price per 1,000 sq ft, effective revenue per hour and the value of the account over a mowing season.

With the default inputs, the price per visit is $49.61. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the lawn care pricing calculator

  1. 1Enter the lot size and subtract the area covered by the house, driveway and beds.
  2. 2Enter the mowing rate you actually achieve with your mower, plus trim and drive time.
  3. 3Set crew size, pay, labor burden, equipment cost per hour and overhead per visit.
  4. 4Choose the profit you want per crew hour and your minimum charge.
  5. 5Quote the price per visit and check the season value of the account.

Formula and method

On-site hrs = (Mowable ÷ Rate + Trim) ÷ Crew · Job hrs = On-site + Drive · Price = max(Minimum, Labor + Equipment + Overhead + Profit/hr × Job hrs)

Mowable area is the lot size minus the footprint of the house, driveway, patios and planting beds. Dividing by the mower’s production rate gives mowing hours; trimming, edging and blowing minutes are added as labor time, and the total is shared across the crew to give the time on site. Drive time is added once for the clock, but every crew member is paid for it.

Labor cost is paid hours × wage × (1 + burden). Equipment cost is charged for the hours the crew is on site, and overhead is a fixed amount per visit. The target profit per crew hour is multiplied by the total job time (including driving) and added to cost. If the result is below your minimum charge, the minimum is used.

Worked examples

Quarter-acre lot, solo operator

Mowing 7,500 sq ft at 20,000 sq ft an hour takes 22.5 minutes; with 15 minutes of trimming and 15 minutes of driving the job takes 52.5 minutes. Labor, equipment and overhead cost $27.73, and $25 profit per hour adds $21.88, for a price of about $49.61 per visit.

One-acre property with a two-person crew

A zero-turn covers the 38,560 sq ft of turf in about 46 minutes of labor, and two people split that plus 30 minutes of trimming to finish in about 38 minutes on site. Costs come to $59.55 and $40 per crew hour of profit brings the price to about $98.31.

Small lawn where the minimum applies

A 2,500 sq ft lawn cut with a push mower around beds and obstacles (8,000 sq ft an hour) calculates to about $38.08, which is under the $40 minimum, so the price is $40 per visit — $1,120 over a 28-visit season.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I charge to mow a lawn?+

Price from time, not guesswork: estimate mowing, trimming and drive time, cost the labor and equipment, add overhead and the profit you want per hour. Many small residential lawns end up at a minimum charge, because driving and setup take as long as the mowing itself.

How do I price lawn mowing per acre?+

Find how long your mower takes to cut an acre (43,560 sq ft) including trimming, multiply by your target revenue per hour, and add drive time. A zero-turn doing about 50,000 sq ft an hour cuts an open acre in under an hour, so per-acre prices fall as lots get bigger.

What should I include in equipment cost per hour?+

Include fuel, oil, blades, routine maintenance and repairs, plus depreciation — the purchase price divided by the hours you expect the machine to last. Add trimmers and blowers too. Truck and trailer costs are usually better treated as overhead.

Should I charge a minimum for mowing?+

Yes. Loading, unloading, driving and invoicing take roughly the same time no matter how small the lawn is. A minimum charge per visit makes sure tiny lots still cover those fixed costs and contribute profit.

Should I charge more for biweekly mowing?+

Many companies do, because grass that grows for two weeks is thicker and slower to cut, and may need bagging or double-cutting. Lower the mowing rate in the calculator for biweekly accounts to reflect the extra time.
