About the Gantt Chart Maker
This Gantt chart maker turns a plain list of tasks into a visual project timeline. Type one task per line with a start date (or “after” another task), a duration in days or weeks (or an end date) and an optional owner. The tool schedules every task, draws a horizontal bar for each one across a calendar, and reports the project’s start, finish and total length in calendar and working days.
It is meant for small-business owners, project coordinators, students and freelancers who need a clear schedule to share with a client, a team or a teacher without learning project-management software. Use “after 2” or “after Wireframes” to chain tasks so that when one slips, everything that depends on it moves automatically. Print the chart from your browser or download a CSV to open in Excel or Google Sheets.
With working-day mode on, durations skip Saturdays and Sundays and tasks never start on a weekend; switch it off to count every calendar day. Public holidays are not excluded, so add a day where a holiday falls. Your tasks stay in your browser and are not stored on our servers.
How to use the gantt chart maker
- 1Name your project and type one task per line: Task | Start | Duration | Owner.
- 2Use a date for tasks with a fixed start, or “after 2” to chain a task to an earlier one.
- 3Enter durations in days (5), weeks (2w) or give an end date.
- 4Choose whether durations count working days or every calendar day.
- 5Review the chart and finish date, then print it or download the CSV.
Formula and method
Each task starts on its own date, or on the day after the task it follows finishes (“after 3” or “after Visual design”; a blank start means after the previous line). In working-day mode a start that lands on a weekend moves to Monday, and the duration counts only Monday to Friday, so a 5-day task starting Monday ends Friday and an 8-day task starting Monday ends the following Wednesday. Durations in weeks count 5 working days or 7 calendar days per week; an end date can be given instead of a duration.
The project starts on the earliest task start and finishes on the latest task end. Total length is reported both in calendar days (start and finish inclusive) and in working days. Holidays are not removed automatically.
Worked examples
Seven-task website project in working days
Discovery runs Monday Nov 2 to Friday Nov 6, wireframes the next week, and the 8-day design phase ends Wednesday Nov 25. The two-week build then runs to Dec 9, QA takes Dec 10–16 and launch is Thursday, December 17 — 46 calendar days and 34 working days in all.
Same plan counting calendar days
Counting every day, discovery ends Nov 6, wireframes Nov 11, design Nov 19, the two-week (14-day) build Dec 3, QA Dec 4–8 and launch Dec 9 — so the same plan finishes eight days earlier on paper. Use working-day mode if your team does not work weekends.
Event plan with end dates
Fixed dates place the venue booking March 2–13 and invitations March 16–20, the tasting follows the venue booking (March 14–16) and the event is on April 17, giving a 47-day plan from March 2.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Gantt chart?+
A Gantt chart is a bar chart of a project schedule. Each task is a horizontal bar whose position shows when it starts and ends, so you can see at a glance what happens when, what overlaps and when the project will finish.
How do I make a simple Gantt chart?+
List the tasks, estimate how long each takes, decide which tasks must wait for others, and give the first task a start date. Enter them here one per line and the bars, dates and finish date are drawn for you.
What is a task dependency?+
A dependency means one task cannot start until another finishes — you cannot build a website before it is designed. Typing “after 3” or “after Visual design” as the start makes the task begin the day after that task ends.
Should I plan in working days or calendar days?+
Use working days when the team works Monday to Friday; a 10-day task then takes two calendar weeks. Use calendar days for work that continues every day, such as concrete curing, shipping transit or event countdowns.
Can I export the Gantt chart?+
Yes. Use the Print button to print or save it as a PDF from your browser, copy the text chart into an email or document, or download a CSV of the schedule to open in Excel or Google Sheets.
