About the Business Name Generator

Naming a business is hard because the best names feel obvious only after someone thinks of them. This business name generator speeds up the brainstorm: enter one or two words that capture what you do or how you want customers to feel, pick an industry, and it produces a shortlist of company name ideas in five styles — compound names that join your words, names with a strong prefix, names with a modern suffix, blended (portmanteau) names and descriptive names built with industry words.

It is useful for founders, freelancers, side-hustlers and agencies who need a starting list to react to. Change the seed text to shuffle a fresh selection from the same ideas, or switch the style to focus on the kind of name you like. Each idea comes with a suggested .com handle so you can quickly see how it would look as a web address.

The generator runs entirely in your browser and does not check availability. Before you fall in love with a name, search your state business registry, the USPTO trademark database and domain registrars, and check social media handles. A name that is easy to spell, say and remember usually beats a clever one.

How to use the business name generator

  1. 1Enter a main keyword, and optionally a second one.
  2. 2Choose the industry closest to your business.
  3. 3Pick a name style or keep the mix of all styles.
  4. 4Change the shuffle seed to see a different selection, and note the names you like.
  5. 5Check registry, trademark, domain and social handle availability for your shortlist.

Formula and method

Ideas = Compound ∪ Prefix ∪ Suffix ∪ Blend ∪ Descriptive (deduplicated, seeded shuffle)

The generator builds every candidate name from your keywords using five patterns: compound names join the keywords (and add an industry word), prefix names put one of 20 strong words in front, suffix names add one of 16 modern endings, blends merge the halves of two keywords or add a short brandable root, and descriptive names pair a keyword with words common in your industry. Where a word ends and an ending begins with a vowel, one vowel is dropped so the name reads smoothly.

Duplicates are removed ignoring case, then the list is shuffled with a pseudo-random generator seeded from your seed text and inputs, so the same inputs always return the same ideas. The number shown is the smaller of your requested count and the total ideas available for that style.

Worked examples

Green + Leaf, all styles

With two keywords and the general industry list there are 126 distinct candidate names, so the generator shows the 24 you asked for, drawn from all five styles in a shuffled order fixed by the seed.

Suffix-style names from one keyword

The suffix style adds each of the 16 endings to “Bloom” — Bloomly, Bloomify, Bloomio and so on — giving exactly 16 distinct ideas, so all 16 are shown even though 60 were requested.

Ten prefix names for a harbor-side café

Twenty prefixes combine with “Harbor” to make 20 ideas such as NorthHarbor and GoldenHarbor; ten of them are shown, and changing the seed swaps in the others.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a good business name?+

Pick a name that is easy to spell and pronounce, hints at what you do or how you want customers to feel, is not too close to a competitor, and is available as a registered business name, trademark, domain and social handle.

How do I check if a business name is taken?+

Search your state’s business entity database (usually run by the Secretary of State), the USPTO trademark search system, domain registrars and the main social networks. A lawyer can run a fuller clearance search before you invest in branding.

Do I need to register my business name?+

In the US, an LLC or corporation registers its legal name when it is formed. If you trade under a different name — or operate as a sole proprietor under anything other than your own name — most states require a DBA (“doing business as”) filing.

Should my business name match my domain?+

It helps. An exact .com is ideal but often taken; short variations such as adding “get”, “hq” or your city are common. Avoid hyphens and unusual spellings that customers will mistype.

Is registering a business name the same as a trademark?+

No. Registering with your state only prevents another company from registering the identical name in that state. A federal trademark registration gives nationwide rights to use the name for your goods or services.
