About the Upside Down Text Generator

This upside down text generator turns ordinary text into characters that look rotated 180 degrees — "Hello World" becomes "plɹoM ollǝH". It swaps each letter, number and punctuation mark for a Unicode look-alike (ɐ for a, ǝ for e, ʇ for t, ¿ for ?) and reverses the order, so the message reads correctly when the screen is turned upside down.

Because the result is plain Unicode text rather than an image, you can copy and paste it into Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Discord, WhatsApp, games and email. People use it for jokes, eye-catching bios, usernames and puzzles. Paste upside-down text back in and it flips the right way up again. Choose "Flip letters only" to turn each character upside down but keep the original left-to-right order.

A few letters have no perfect upside-down twin, so the closest Unicode character is used, and some fonts or older devices may show an empty box for rare symbols such as ꓭ or ꓤ. Screen readers will not read upside-down text as words, so avoid it for important information.

How to use the upside down text generator

  1. 1Type or paste the text you want to flip.
  2. 2Choose upside down (rotated) or flip letters only.
  3. 3Copy the result and paste it into your post, chat or bio.
  4. 4Paste upside-down text back in to flip it the right way up.

Formula and method

Output = reverse(map(each character → its 180° look-alike))

There is no "upside-down font" in Unicode, so the generator substitutes characters from other alphabets and symbol blocks that happen to look like rotated Latin letters: the IPA letters ɐ, ǝ, ɥ, ɯ and ɹ, the turned capitals ∀, Ǝ and Ⅎ, Lisu letters such as ꓭ and ꓤ, and pairs that are already rotations of each other such as b/q, d/p, n/u, M/W and 6/9. Letters like o, s, x, z, H, I, N and 0 look the same rotated and are kept.

Rotating a page by 180 degrees also reverses reading order, so after substituting each character the line is reversed (and lines are stacked in reverse order). Because every substitution is a pair, applying the tool twice gives back the original text.

Worked examples

Flipping a greeting

Five characters are swapped for look-alikes: e→ǝ, W→M, r→ɹ, d→p and !→¡. The other seven (H, the three l's, both o's and the space) look the same when rotated. Finally the line is reversed so it reads correctly with the screen turned upside down.

Flipping letters without reversing

In flip-letters-only mode the letters are substituted but the order is kept: p→d, a→ɐ, r→ɹ, t→ʇ, y→ʎ, i→ᴉ, m→ɯ, e→ǝ. Nine letters change and only the space stays the same.

Turning upside-down text back

Every substitution works both ways, so feeding in upside-down text maps each look-alike back to its normal letter and reverses the line again, restoring the original words.

Frequently asked questions

How do you type upside down text?+

Keyboards cannot type it directly. Paste your text into this generator, which replaces each character with a Unicode look-alike and reverses the order, then copy the result into any app that accepts text.

Does upside down text work on Instagram, TikTok and Discord?+

Yes. The output is ordinary Unicode text, so it pastes into captions, bios, comments, usernames and messages on most platforms. A few rare characters may show as boxes on older phones or in fonts that lack them.

Why do some letters not flip perfectly?+

Unicode has no complete upside-down alphabet, so the closest available symbols are used. Lowercase letters have good matches, but capitals such as Q, R and J rely on less common characters that look slightly different.

Can I flip upside down text back to normal?+

Yes. Paste the upside-down text into the box and it flips back, because each substitution is a two-way pair (b↔q, d↔p, ǝ↔e). Characters that were left unchanged stay as they are.

Is upside down text accessible?+

Not really. Screen readers announce the substitute symbols by their Unicode names or skip them, so blind and low-vision users cannot read the message. Use it for fun, not for essential information.
