About the Emoji Letter Converter

This emoji letter converter spells your text with emoji. Type a word or phrase and it swaps each letter for a regional indicator symbol (the blue-box letters πŸ‡¦ πŸ‡§ πŸ‡¨ used in Discord, Slack and social posts) or for squared letters such as πŸ…°οΈ πŸ…±οΈ πŸ†‚, turns digits into keycap emoji like 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣ and replaces ! and ? with ❗ and ❓.

It is useful for eye-catching usernames, server channel names, captions, reactions and messages. The Discord shortcode style outputs :regional_indicator_a: codes that Discord converts automatically, and the clap style puts πŸ‘ between every word for emphasis.

Regional indicator letters are designed to pair up into country flags β€” πŸ‡Ί followed by πŸ‡Έ shows as a US flag β€” so by default the converter separates letters with a space. Choose a zero-width space for a tighter look that still blocks flags. Letters outside A–Z, accented characters and other symbols are left unchanged. The output also shows its length in UTF-16 units, since many apps count emoji as two characters.

How to use the emoji letter converter

  1. 1Type the word or phrase you want to spell in emoji.
  2. 2Choose regional indicator letters, squared letters, Discord shortcodes or claps.
  3. 3Pick a separator β€” keep the space to stop letters merging into flags.
  4. 4Copy the emoji text and paste it into your message, bio or channel name.

Formula and method

Regional indicator = U+1F1E6 + (letter βˆ’ A); Squared = U+1F170 + (letter βˆ’ A); Keycap = digit + U+FE0F + U+20E3

Unicode has 26 regional indicator symbols, from U+1F1E6 (πŸ‡¦) to U+1F1FF (πŸ‡Ώ), one for each Latin letter, so each letter is converted by adding its position in the alphabet to U+1F1E6. Squared letters use the negative squared Latin capital letters starting at U+1F170; A, B, O and P are full emoji and get the emoji variation selector U+FE0F so they display in colour. Lowercase letters are treated as capitals.

Digits, # and * become keycap emoji by appending U+FE0F and the combining enclosing keycap U+20E3, so each keycap is three code points. Because two regional indicators side by side form a flag, letters are separated by a space or an invisible zero-width space, and words are separated by three spaces (or one with the tighter separators).

Worked examples

Regional indicator letters with keycap numbers

All 10 letters become regional indicators, the four digits become keycaps and ! becomes ❗ β€” 15 conversions. Keycaps use 3 code points each; with 12 spaces between letters and two 3-space word gaps the output has 41 code points. Each of the 10 regional indicators takes 2 UTF-16 units, so the length is 51.

Discord shortcodes

Each letter becomes a :regional_indicator_x: shortcode and the digit becomes :five:, which Discord turns into the matching emoji when the message is sent. Letters are separated by one space and words by three.

Clap emphasis

The clap style keeps the words as typed and inserts a πŸ‘ between each of the four words β€” three claps in total. The 17 letters themselves are unchanged.

Squared letters for a username

B, O and B become πŸ…±οΈ πŸ…ΎοΈ πŸ…±οΈ. All three are emoji that need the variation selector, so the output has 3 letters + 3 selectors = 6 code points, and 9 UTF-16 units because each squared letter is outside the Basic Multilingual Plane and takes two.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type emoji letters?+

Type your text here and copy the result. On Discord you can also type :regional_indicator_a: through :regional_indicator_z:, and on most phones the regional indicator letters are not on the emoji keyboard, so copying is the easiest way.

Why do my emoji letters turn into flags?+

Regional indicator symbols were created to encode country flags: a pair matching an ISO country code, such as πŸ‡« + πŸ‡·, is shown as the French flag. Put a space or zero-width space between letters to keep them separate.

Do emoji letters work everywhere?+

Regional indicators and keycaps are standard Unicode supported on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and the major social platforms. Older systems may show them as plain boxed letters, and squared letters other than πŸ…°οΈ πŸ…±οΈ πŸ…ΎοΈ πŸ…ΏοΈ appear as black text symbols rather than colour emoji.

Why does an emoji count as two characters?+

Most emoji sit outside Unicode’s Basic Multilingual Plane and are stored as two UTF-16 code units (a surrogate pair). Apps that measure length in UTF-16, including JavaScript and many character counters, therefore count each one as 2.

Can I use emoji letters in usernames?+

Some platforms allow them in display names (Discord, Twitch display names, Instagram bios), but most reject emoji in actual usernames or handles. Screen readers also read each emoji letter by its name, which can make text hard to follow.
