About the Turkey Thawing Calculator
This turkey thawing calculator tells you how long a frozen turkey takes to defrost safely and, more usefully, the date you need to move it from the freezer to the refrigerator so it is ready on cooking day. Enter the weight, the day you plan to roast it and the time it goes in the oven, and it works out both the refrigerator schedule and the cold-water alternative, including how many times to change the water.
It follows USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance: in the refrigerator allow about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds of turkey, and in cold water allow about 30 minutes per pound, changing the water every 30 minutes so it stays cold. A turkey thawed in the fridge can stay there for another 1–2 days before cooking, so starting early is always the safe choice; a cold-water-thawed bird must be cooked immediately.
Never thaw a turkey on the counter, in the garage or in hot water — the outside warms into the bacterial danger zone (40–140°F) long before the centre thaws. If you run out of time, USDA says it is safe to cook a turkey from frozen; it simply takes about 50% longer than a thawed bird.
How to use the turkey thawing calculator
- 1Enter the weight from the turkey’s label and choose lb or kg.
- 2Pick the thawing rate — 4 lb per day is the safer default.
- 3Enter the day you will cook and the time it goes in the oven.
- 4Move the turkey to the fridge on the date shown, on a tray to catch drips.
- 5If you are short on time, use the cold-water schedule and cook it straight away.
Formula and method
USDA FSIS says to allow approximately 24 hours of refrigerator thawing for every 4–5 pounds of turkey. The calculator divides the weight by 4 by default (the slower, safer rate for a fridge at or below 40°F) and rounds the days up to whole days when it picks the start date, so the bird is always fully thawed in time.
For a cold-water thaw, USDA allows about 30 minutes per pound with the turkey in a leak-proof bag, fully submerged, and the water changed every 30 minutes — so one change per pound. Kilograms are converted at 1 kg = 2.2046 lb.
- W
- Turkey weight in pounds
- r
- Pounds thawed per day in the fridge (4 or 5)
Worked examples
14 lb turkey for Thanksgiving 2026
At 4 lb per day a 14 lb turkey needs 3.5 days in the fridge, rounded up to 4, so move it from the freezer on Sunday, November 22 for a Thursday, November 26 roast. A cold-water thaw would take 7 hours with 14 water changes — starting at 4 AM for an 11 AM oven time.
20 lb turkey at 5 lb per day
Twenty pounds ÷ 5 lb per day = 4 days, so start thawing on Monday, December 21 for Christmas Day. In cold water it would take 10 hours, meaning a midnight start for a 10 AM oven time.
6 kg turkey
Six kilograms is about 13.2 lb. That is 3.3 days in the fridge (start 4 days ahead) or about 6 hours 37 minutes in cold water.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to thaw a turkey in the fridge?+
Allow about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds. A 12 lb turkey needs about 3 days, a 16 lb turkey about 4 days and a 20 lb turkey 4–5 days. Keep the fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below and put the bird on a tray.
How do I thaw a turkey in cold water?+
Keep the turkey in its leak-proof wrapper, submerge it in cold tap water and change the water every 30 minutes. Allow about 30 minutes per pound — around 7 hours for a 14 lb bird — and cook it immediately once thawed.
How long can a thawed turkey stay in the fridge?+
A turkey thawed in the refrigerator can be kept there for 1–2 days before cooking. That is why starting a day early is the safest plan. Turkeys thawed in cold water or the microwave must be cooked right away.
Can I cook a turkey that is still frozen?+
Yes. USDA says a frozen or partly frozen turkey can be roasted safely; it just takes about 50% longer than a fully thawed one. Remove the giblet bag with tongs once it loosens and check 165°F in the thigh, wing and breast.
Is it safe to thaw a turkey on the counter?+
No. Even if the centre is still frozen, the outer layer can sit above 40°F for hours, where bacteria multiply quickly. Use the refrigerator, cold water or a microwave instead.
