About the Recipe Cost Calculator

This recipe cost calculator prices a dish from the ingredients you actually use. For each ingredient, enter the amount the recipe calls for, the size of the package you buy and what the package costs — the calculator charges only the fraction you use. Add the number of servings and you get the total batch cost and the cost per plate.

It is useful for home cooks budgeting meals, meal-preppers comparing recipes, bakers pricing cakes and cookies for sale, and small food businesses, caterers and food trucks setting menu prices. An overhead allowance covers the little things that are hard to itemise, such as spices, oil for frying, seasoning and waste.

The suggested menu price divides the cost per serving by your target food cost percentage. Restaurants commonly aim for food costs of roughly 28–35% of the menu price; home bakers selling goods often add labour and packaging separately. Units just need to match within a line — grams with grams, ounces with ounces, or items with items.

With the default inputs, the cost per serving is $2.09. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the recipe cost calculator

  1. 1List each ingredient on its own line: name, amount used, package size, package price.
  2. 2Keep units consistent within a line (grams with grams, items with items).
  3. 3Enter how many servings the recipe makes.
  4. 4Add an overhead allowance for spices, oil and waste.
  5. 5Set a target food cost to see a suggested selling price per serving.

Formula and method

Line cost = Package price × Amount used ÷ Package size
Total = Σ line costs × (1 + Overhead %)
Cost per serving = Total ÷ Servings
Menu price = Cost per serving ÷ Target food cost %

Each ingredient is costed by the share of the package you actually use: if a 1 kg bag of pasta costs $2.49 and the recipe uses 500 g, that line costs $1.245. Lines written as "quantity, unit price" multiply the two, and a single number is taken as the cost directly.

The listed costs are summed and increased by the overhead percentage to cover small, unlisted items and waste. Dividing by servings gives the cost per plate. The suggested selling price divides that cost by the target food cost percentage, which is how restaurants usually back into menu prices.

Worked examples

Spaghetti bolognese for 6

Half a $2.49 pack of pasta is $1.245, the beef $5.99, passata $2.29, one of three onions $0.50, 3 of 10 garlic cloves $0.18, 50 g of a $4.99 200 g parmesan $1.25 and 30 ml of oil $0.48 — $11.93 in all. A 5% allowance makes $12.53, or $2.09 a serving; at a 30% food cost you would charge about $6.96.

Batch of 24 cookies for a bake sale

Flour costs $0.49, half a pound of butter $2.40, sugar $0.55, two eggs $0.60, a bag of chips $3.99 and a teaspoon of vanilla $0.55 — about $8.57 per batch or 36¢ a cookie. Pricing at a 25% food cost suggests about $1.43 each.

Quick costing with direct prices

Chicken at $8.50, 2 cups of rice at $0.75 each and $4.20 of vegetables total $14.20. Adding 10% overhead gives $15.62, or $3.91 per serving.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the cost of a recipe?+

For each ingredient divide the package price by the package size and multiply by the amount used, then add up every line. Dividing that total by the number of servings gives the cost per serving.

What is a good food cost percentage?+

Many restaurants target a food cost of roughly 28–35% of the menu price, though it varies by concept: pizza and pasta can run lower, while steak and seafood often run higher. The remaining margin must cover labour, rent and profit.

How do I price homemade food to sell?+

Start with the ingredient cost per item from this calculator, then add packaging, your time at an hourly rate and a profit margin. Dividing ingredient cost by a 25–35% food cost target is a quick first check on price.

Should I include spices and oil in recipe cost?+

Yes, but it is easier to cover small amounts of spices, oil, salt and trim waste with a percentage overhead (often 3–10%) than to weigh every pinch. List expensive items such as saffron or vanilla explicitly.

What units should I use for ingredients?+

Any units work as long as the amount used and the package size are in the same unit on the same line — for example grams and grams, ounces and ounces, or eggs and eggs. Use a cups-to-grams converter if the recipe and package differ.
