About the Ounces to Pounds Converter
This ounces to pounds converter divides a weight in ounces by 16 to give pounds, and also writes it the way scales and labels do — whole pounds plus leftover ounces, such as "2 lb 8 oz". Metric equivalents in grams and kilograms are shown too.
It is handy for package and postage weights, baby birth weights, meat and produce prices quoted per pound, fishing catches, and recipes that switch between ounces and pounds of an ingredient.
This tool uses avoirdupois ounces, the everyday weight ounce (28.35 g). Fluid ounces measure volume and troy ounces (31.1 g) are used only for precious metals, so neither should be entered here.
With the default inputs, the pounds is 2.5 lb. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the ounces to pounds converter

- 4Check grams or kilograms if you need metric.
Formula and method
There are exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces in a pound, so dividing ounces by 16 gives pounds as a decimal. For the pounds-and-ounces format, the whole pounds are taken first and the remainder is shown in ounces, rounded to 0.1 oz (a full 16 oz rounds up into the next pound).
Since 1959 the pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, which makes one ounce exactly 28.349523125 g. The gram and kilogram figures use that exact factor.

Worked examples
40 oz of ground beef
40 ÷ 16 = 2.5 lb. Two whole pounds use 32 oz, leaving 8 oz, so it is 2 lb 8 oz, about 1.13 kg.
100 oz parcel
100 ÷ 16 = 6.25 lb. Six pounds is 96 oz, leaving 4 oz: 6 lb 4 oz, or 2,835 g.
7.5 oz bag of chips
7.5 ÷ 16 = 0.469 lb — under half a pound — which is 212.6 g.
