About the New Zealand Salary Calculator
This New Zealand salary calculator estimates your take-home pay from a gross annual salary. It applies the PAYE income tax brackets of 10.5%, 17.5%, 30%, 33% and 39%, the ACC earners’ levy, your KiwiSaver contribution rate and, if you have one, student loan repayments of 12% above the repayment threshold.
Use it to compare job offers, check a payslip, or see what changing your KiwiSaver rate from 3.5% to 6% really costs each fortnight. Results are shown yearly, monthly, fortnightly and weekly, with a breakdown of every deduction and your effective tax rate.
It targets the 2026/27 tax year (from 1 April 2026) for a New Zealand tax resident on a primary tax code (M or ME). It uses the 2026/27 ACC earners’ levy of 1.75% on earnings up to NZ$156,641 (a maximum levy of NZ$2,741.22) and the NZ$24,128 student loan repayment threshold; the levy fields are editable because they are reset each April. It does not include the independent earner tax credit, secondary tax codes or Working for Families.
With the default inputs, the take-home pay (yearly) is NZ$56,342.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method
PAYE is calculated progressively: 10.5% on the first NZ$15,600, 17.5% up to NZ$53,500, 30% up to NZ$78,100, 33% up to NZ$180,000 and 39% on anything above. Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band’s rate, so moving into a higher bracket never reduces your take-home pay.
The ACC earners’ levy is a flat percentage of earnings up to the maximum liable earnings cap. KiwiSaver employee contributions are a percentage of gross pay and are deducted after tax (they do not reduce PAYE). Student loan repayments are 12 cents per dollar earned above the annual repayment threshold.

Worked examples
NZ$75,000 salary with 3.5% KiwiSaver
PAYE is NZ$1,638 (10.5% of NZ$15,600) + NZ$6,632.50 (17.5% of NZ$37,900) + NZ$6,450 (30% of NZ$21,500) = NZ$14,720.50. ACC at 1.75% is NZ$1,312.50 and KiwiSaver at 3.5% is NZ$2,625, leaving NZ$56,342 a year or NZ$2,167 a fortnight.
NZ$55,000 graduate with a student loan
Tax is NZ$1,638 + NZ$6,632.50 + 30% of NZ$1,500 = NZ$8,720.50. The student loan takes 12% of the NZ$30,872 above the threshold (NZ$3,704.64), ACC is NZ$962.50 and KiwiSaver NZ$1,650, leaving NZ$39,962.36.
NZ$200,000 salary, not in KiwiSaver
Tax is NZ$15,650.50 on the first NZ$78,100, plus 33% of NZ$101,900 (NZ$33,627) and 39% of the last NZ$20,000 (NZ$7,800), totalling NZ$57,077.50. ACC is capped at NZ$156,641 × 1.75% = NZ$2,741.22, so take-home pay is NZ$140,181.28.
Frequently asked questions
What are the NZ tax brackets for 2026?+
From 31 July 2024 and for the 2026/27 year, resident individuals pay 10.5% up to NZ$15,600, 17.5% to NZ$53,500, 30% to NZ$78,100, 33% to NZ$180,000 and 39% on income above NZ$180,000.
What is the ACC earners’ levy?+
It is a levy on employment income that funds ACC cover for non-work injuries. For 2026/27 it is NZ$1.75 per NZ$100 of earnings (1.75%), charged only up to the maximum liable earnings of NZ$156,641, so nobody pays more than NZ$2,741.22 a year. It is collected through PAYE.
What is the KiwiSaver default rate in 2026?+
From 1 April 2026 the default employee and minimum employer KiwiSaver rate rose from 3% to 3.5%. You can choose 3.5%, 4%, 6%, 8% or 10%, and employees can apply to stay at 3% temporarily, in which case the employer may also contribute 3%.
How much is a student loan repayment in NZ?+
If you live in New Zealand your employer deducts 12 cents for every dollar you earn above the repayment threshold of NZ$24,128 a year (NZ$464 a week, NZ$928 a fortnight). Overseas-based borrowers repay on different rules.
Does KiwiSaver reduce my tax?+
No. Employee KiwiSaver contributions come out of after-tax pay, so they do not lower PAYE. From 1 July 2025 the government contribution is 25 cents per dollar you contribute, up to NZ$260.72 a year (reached at NZ$1,042.86 of contributions), for members earning under NZ$180,000 of taxable income.
