About the MG to Grams Converter

This mg to grams converter moves a mass between milligrams, grams, micrograms and kilograms, and also shows the value in avoirdupois ounces. Enter a number, choose the unit it is in, and every equivalent appears at once, so you never have to count zeros or shift a decimal point by hand.

It is handy for reading nutrition labels (sodium, caffeine and vitamins are listed in mg or mcg), weighing small amounts on a jewelry or kitchen scale, lab and classroom work, and comparing product specs quoted in different metric units.

Every step in the metric mass ladder is a factor of 1,000: 1 kg = 1,000 g, 1 g = 1,000 mg and 1 mg = 1,000 mcg. This is a general unit converter — it is not a medication dosing tool, so always follow the label or a pharmacist for medicines.

With the default inputs, the grams is 0.5 g. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the mg to grams converter

  1. 1Enter the mass.
  2. 2Choose the unit it is measured in (mcg, mg, g or kg).
  3. 3Read the value in grams at the top.
  4. 4Check milligrams, micrograms, kilograms and ounces below.

Formula and method

g = mg ÷ 1,000 | mg = mcg ÷ 1,000 | kg = g ÷ 1,000

The metric prefixes are exact powers of ten. "Milli" means one-thousandth and "micro" means one-millionth, so a milligram is 0.001 g and a microgram is 0.000001 g. To go to a larger unit divide by 1,000 for each step; to go to a smaller unit multiply by 1,000.

The converter first turns your value into grams, then expresses it in every other unit. Ounces use the exact definition 1 avoirdupois ounce = 28.349523125 g. Micrograms are written mcg on US labels and µg in scientific usage — they are the same unit.

Worked examples

500 mg to grams

Divide by 1,000: 500 mg = 0.5 g. Multiply by 1,000 for the smaller unit: 500 mg = 500,000 mcg.

Daily sodium limit of 2,300 mg

2,300 mg ÷ 1,000 = 2.3 g of sodium, about 0.081 oz.

2.5 g of saffron in milligrams

Multiply grams by 1,000 to get milligrams: 2.5 × 1,000 = 2,500 mg, or 2,500,000 mcg.

250 mcg to mg

250 mcg ÷ 1,000 = 0.25 mg, and 0.25 mg ÷ 1,000 = 0.00025 g.

Frequently asked questions

How many mg are in a gram?+

There are exactly 1,000 milligrams in 1 gram. So 1 mg is 0.001 g, and 0.5 g is 500 mg.

How do I convert mg to g?+

Divide milligrams by 1,000. For example, 750 mg ÷ 1,000 = 0.75 g. To go from grams to milligrams, multiply by 1,000.

Is mcg the same as mg?+

No. A microgram (mcg or µg) is one-thousandth of a milligram, so 1,000 mcg = 1 mg. Mixing them up is a 1,000-fold error, which is why labels spell them out.

How many grams is 1,000 mg?+

1,000 mg is exactly 1 gram. Likewise 100 mg is 0.1 g and 10,000 mg is 10 g.

Can I use this converter for medication doses?+

It converts units accurately, but it is not a dosing tool. Medication amounts should always come from the product label, your prescriber or a pharmacist.
