  • Your trading turnover is ₹5,000,000 (₹0.5 crore) against an audit limit of ₹10 crore.
  • You have ₹9.5 crore of headroom before turnover alone triggers an audit.
  • You have a net trading loss of ₹700,000. File ITR-3 on time to carry forward F&O (non-speculative) and intraday (speculative) losses separately.

Turnover by component

About the F&O Turnover Calculator

For income-tax purposes, the “turnover” of an Indian trader is not the contract value on your broker statement. Following the ICAI Guidance Note on Tax Audit (Revised 2023), turnover from futures and options is the total of favourable and unfavourable differences on squared-off trades — every profit and every loss added as a positive number — and intraday (speculative) turnover is the aggregate of positive and negative differences. Delivery-based trades held as stock-in-trade count at their full sale value. This F&O turnover calculator adds these up and compares the total with the tax audit threshold.

It is for F&O and intraday traders preparing ITR-3, and their accountants, who need to know whether a tax audit is required. The audit limits used are those in section 44AB of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (FY 2025-26) and section 63 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (tax year 2026-27 onwards), which carry the same thresholds: ₹1 crore of business turnover, raised to ₹10 crore when cash receipts and cash payments are each no more than 5% of the total — which is normally the case for trading through a bank-linked broker account.

Enter the sum of profits and the sum of losses from your broker’s tax P&L report rather than the net figure. The calculator does not cover the separate audit trigger for taxpayers who previously used presumptive taxation (section 44AD / section 58) and now declare lower profits; check that with a chartered accountant.

With the default inputs, the total turnover for tax audit is ₹5,000,000.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the f&o turnover calculator

  1. 1Download the tax P&L report for the financial year from your broker.
  2. 2Enter the total of profitable F&O trades and the total of losing F&O trades separately.
  3. 3Enter intraday equity positive and negative differences separately.
  4. 4Add delivery sales only if you treat shares as stock-in-trade, plus any other business receipts.
  5. 5Confirm whether cash transactions are within 5%, then read the turnover and audit status.

Formula and method

Turnover = Σ|F&O profits| + Σ|F&O losses| + extra option premium + Σ|intraday +ve| + Σ|intraday −ve| + delivery sales (stock-in-trade) + other receipts

Paragraph 5.10 of the ICAI Guidance Note on Tax Audit (Revised 2023) says that for derivatives the total of favourable and unfavourable differences on squared-off transactions is turnover, reverse trades count, open positions count in the year they are squared off, and premium received on sold options is included unless it is already part of the profit or loss being added. For speculative (intraday) transactions the aggregate of positive and negative differences is turnover. Delivery-based transactions count at full sale value.

The total is compared with the audit limit: ₹1 crore of business turnover, or ₹10 crore where cash receipts and cash payments each do not exceed 5% of the total (section 44AB for FY 2025-26; section 63 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from tax year 2026-27). Each trade’s result is taken as an absolute value, so netting profits against losses would understate turnover.

Σ|F&O profits|
Sum of all favourable differences on squared-off futures and options trades
Σ|F&O losses|
Sum of all unfavourable differences, as positive numbers
Intraday ±
Positive and negative differences on intraday equity trades

Worked examples

Part-time F&O and intraday trader with a loss

F&O turnover is ₹18.5 lakh of profits plus ₹24 lakh of losses = ₹42.5 lakh; intraday adds ₹3 lakh + ₹4.5 lakh = ₹7.5 lakh. Total turnover of ₹50 lakh is well under the ₹10 crore limit, even though contract values on the broker statement may run into hundreds of crores.

Active options trader above ₹10 crore

₹6.2 crore of winning trades and ₹5.4 crore of losing trades make ₹11.6 crore of F&O turnover, and intraday adds ₹55 lakh, for ₹12.15 crore in total. That exceeds ₹10 crore, so a tax audit is required even though net profit is only ₹85 lakh.

Cash transactions above 5% — ₹1 crore limit

F&O turnover is ₹45 lakh + ₹40 lakh + ₹5 lakh of separately counted premium = ₹90 lakh, intraday ₹10 lakh and other receipts ₹2 lakh, totalling ₹1.02 crore. Because cash transactions exceed 5%, the limit is ₹1 crore and an audit is needed.

Frequently asked questions

How is F&O turnover calculated for income tax?+

Add up the profit on every winning squared-off trade and the loss on every losing trade, treating losses as positive numbers. This “absolute turnover” method comes from the ICAI Guidance Note on Tax Audit, not from the contract value on your contract notes.

Is option premium included in turnover?+

The Guidance Note says premium received on sale of options is included, but if the premium is already part of the profit or loss on that trade it should not be added again. Most broker P&L reports already include it, so the extra premium field is usually zero.

What is the tax audit limit for F&O traders?+

Turnover above ₹1 crore requires an audit, but the limit is ₹10 crore when both cash receipts and cash payments are no more than 5% of the totals. Since trading flows through bank accounts, most traders fall under the ₹10 crore limit.

Do I need a tax audit if I have F&O losses?+

Not because of losses alone if turnover is under the limit. An audit can still apply if you used presumptive taxation (section 44AD) in an earlier year and now declare profit below the deemed rate with income above the basic exemption limit. Ask a chartered accountant to check.

Which ITR form should F&O traders file?+

F&O income is non-speculative business income and intraday equity trading is speculative business income, so traders file ITR-3. Filing on time is needed to carry forward losses: F&O losses for 8 years and speculative losses for 4 years.
